It sounded like the Rangers were having no part in a bidding war. They told the agent to tell us what it will take and we'll tell you if we can pay it.

Typical Yankees. I knew they'd over react like that when I saw who the Redsox have got.

Over react? How do you get over react when from backing out of the deal?

chuck greenberg said rangers made their offer and left....Said he cant give specifics and that ray davis...I think that is the xto co-owner went on this trip.

Apparently lee told them he is weighing his options.

It's ok, as long as we can get Greinke. I'd rather have Grienke.

grienke wont go to ny and the yankees dont have the prospects to get him. They do have some major league pictures they could move though.

Not getting lee would be a blow to ny.

apparently the rangers offered lee a menu today of multiple options for him to choose from.

Would love to see lee stay here and the rangers make the greinke/garza deal happen. I have to wonder if the rays dont hold garza till the break though.

You would have to think if Ray Davis went they brought the $$$ tonight. My guess is Lee is a Ranger by the morning.

the group that went to see him this afternoon at his agents office were chuck, ray davis and thad levine. Thats interesting to me. Nolan Ryan not going must have made a statement that he has done all he could.

Pretty interesting also that they left him a menu of different options he can select!!!

They need to get this done one way or another and fix the rest of the spots on the team before guys go off the market.

and again on the flip side it leaves the yankees in a weird spot if they dont get him..

I think they know they can resign Vlad, but are just looking at other options - Matsui and Beltre (w/ Young moving to DH and if they don't get Lee).

Other than that, a #1 pitcher is the main concern. If you can't get Lee, then move on to KC for Greinke and Tampa for Garza (who should come considerably cheaper than Greinke).

I don't think the Rangers are out of the hunt, but Crawford and Lee were the Yankees 2 biggest free agent targets, and now that Crawford has signed with the Red Sox the Yankees will go even harder after Lee.

That would be quite molded if the Yankees miss out on both. :muttley:

Who knows, maybe Lee has enough money already and will be getting enough money from whoever he signs with that he will choose the place where his heart is content and where his children can grow up in a warm, safe environment, and his wife can be happy and close to her family ...................

NAW! He'll take the money!

Apparently the Rangers didn't make a single offer, they made many different offers. Maybe this isn't done yet.

As I understand it, the Yankees made there 7 year offer, the Rangers had discussions with Lee's agent and asked what Lee wants? Lee's agent told the Rangers that that is not how it works and advised them that they would have to put their best offer on the table. They devised multiple offers and presented them to Lee.

I don't have any idea how this will play out but I suspect this is probably not to the advantage of Texas. Lee's agent will go back to the Yankees and try to get more out of them. Unless the Yankees determine that they don't want to spend the money, I think that the Yankees will probably end up with a superior offer. Either way, they will drive up the cost so if Texas does win out, it's going to cost.

I don't know, I guess we'll see.

I agree. The process doesn't favor Texas.

Happy Friday Ernie. How have you been?

Good. Sweating this Cliff Lee thing. I have a feeling that a decision will be made within a few days.

What do you think the odds are that the Rangers will go after Greinke if they lose on Lee? ESPN makes it sound like they will go after him hard. I hate giving up more prospects though. We've built a strong farm system, but we started using it to pick up guys late last season, and i don't want to deplete it.

Well, they would almost have to go after him. I'd say that if they don't get Lee, it's about 100%. they are forced to give up prospects in exchange for Greinke.

My question is this. They made several offers and gave them all to him. What the hell does that mean?

Maybe they offered him 5, 6, and 7 year deals, but the value per year drops. $20M @ 7 year = $140, $22M @ 6 = $132M, $25M @ 5 years $125M. That seems the most logical, but it appears that did something more dramatic.

Maybe they could have offered him a 5 or 6 year deal, with a team AND player option. The 6th or 7th year could have buyout clauses of maybe $5M or $7M per year. A 5 year deal @ $25M with two option years at $7M buyout, that would make the deal worth a minimum of $134M for just five, but possibly could be worth far more if Lee went the full 7 years. If Lee felt he could make more money going back on the market, he could opt out and hit free agency after five or six years and resign at the going rate.

Hmm, that would be the type of deal I would throw at Cliff.
