Looks like we have to go 3-0 and it all comes down to Philly

Man, when I saw the schedule before the season started, a sense of dread came over me thinking that final game against Philly in their house would be huge. I figured it would be a fight for the division or a playoff spot and it looks like thats what its gonna be, unless we are already out of it.

Tell me the flaw in the following logic:

If we lose one of the next two, the best we can be going into Philly is 9-6 and the best record we can have is 10-6.

If philly wins their next two games (which I fully expect to occur), they will be 9-5-1. The best they can finish is 10-5-1.

So if Philly goes 2-0 over the next two games, then we have to win out because if we win the next two, but lose to Phily, we'll be 10-6 and they'll be 10-5-1.

Hopefully Philly will slip up between now and then because I really don't want that game to be for all the marbles (unless of course I could be certain we'd win and not lose more players in the process).

If Philly loses one of their next two games, we still need to win 2 of 3 and hope we get help from other teams.

If Philly wins out and we spilt the next two, then we must win in Philly and get help from other teams.

This team has got to step up and really can't afford to lose another game until preseason of 09.

They sure haven't done themselves any favors this year.

How sweet would it be if they pulled it off after all the ups and downs of this year?

My two favorite numbers are now 7 and 0

Here's a scenerio where all we have to do is win our next 2...

1) We beat the Giants and Ravens, but lose @Philly.

2) Tampa loses to @Atlanta and San Diego, but beats Oakland.

3) Atlanta beats Tampa and St. Louis, but loses @Minny.

Keep in mind, Tampa could very well lose to SD b/c when Norv Turner's *** is on the line, he puts out his best performances. Looks like the Chargers could finish the season strong, hence Norv convincing AJ Smith he's still the guy.

Anyhow-that would leave us, Tampa, and Atlanta at 10-6. Tampa has the edge over Atlanta b/c of better conference record, then we would have the advantage over Tampa b/c of H2H.

Voila! Regardless of what Philly does, this has a GOOD chance of playing out.

My money says we're either already out of it by Philly or we have to win that game to make it into the playoffs. Regardless of what plays out, I sure hope we go 3-0

There is actually one scenario where we make it in at 9-7, but it involves getting a lot of help from teams that have nothing to play for, so it isn't likely to happen.

Did you read my scenerio above?

Yes, I understand it, I just don't believe its going to play out that way, I think this team is either going to completely crumble or they will win out going into Philly and circumstances will dictate that we have to win that game as well.

I realize other scenarios could occur, I just don't believe they will.

I'm hoping we win three as well.

But wouldn't it be pretty crazy if it came down to that final game against Philly with the winner advancing to the playoffs?

Vintage NFC East.

I can see Atlanta beating Tampa this weekend-they're at home, thirsting for revenge after that wk2 loss, Tampa plays poorly on the road, and they're fighting for a playoff spot.

Like I said above-I can see San Diego beating Tampa the week after b/c Norv will make sure his Chargers go out with a strong finish to make sure his job is secure(we've seen him do this numerous times in Washington).

I know what you're saying, but at the same time, neither of these scenerios above are impossible at all.

I agree completely and didn't mean to sound dismissive of your points, they are definately valid.

I'd like your scenarios to play out, but we still go 3-0 anyway

I would rather prefer to have the luxury of resting our starters in the Philly game so that we can rest up a bit before the playoffs, plus we get injuries every time we play Philly.

Dont the rules change in a three way tie? What if Atlanta has a better conference record than we do?

Someone on another thread said that in the event of a 3 way tie with the WC, they'll FIRST look at the teams in the SAME division, get the better team of that, then compare this team with the other team outside of their division.

So yeah-if my scenerio plays out, they'll first compare Tampa and Atlanta, then b/c Tampa would have the edge, they'll compare them to Dallas.

Sounds good to me, I just like the momentum thing and getting over the December slump

Honestly-our Dec run last year wasn't bad. We may have barely beat a bad Detroit team, but we were coming off an emotional win against another elite NFC team(the Packers), and the Lions were actually very good at home(even the Giants struggled with them there). Prior to Owens going down in the Carolina game, we had 250 yards of O in the 1st half, only to grind it out in the 2nd half. In the Eagles game, the minute our offense started getting going, Romo and Gurode got banged up, and ended up losing by only 4 pts. The Skins game was a throw away b/c we clinched everything and rested our banged up players.

I think your being too kind on these two games. We should have lost by 11 to Philly but Westbrook laid down at the one yard line when there was no one there to tackle him short of the end zone so we couldn't get the ball back. The Eagles generally kicked our butts that game.

In the Washinton game, we played our starters the whole first half and Washington kicked our butts. Maybe they were'nt as motivated, but the performance reeked of some of the crap we've seen throughout this year.

I just think we may be better served from a confidence and momentum stand point to win out, but I am just as concerned about further injury so it's a really tough call considering this team doesn't seem to respond well when they take their foot off the gas. It would certainly be nice to have the option of resting our guys though.

Not to get nit-picky, but Romo overthrew a wide open Owens at the beginning of the game. Otherwise, Philly's morale would have been shot down(especially after going through a terrible season), and we could have been on our way to a big blowout. Instead, we just let them hang around.

Anyhow-back to the topic-if we had a bye going into the playoffs, I would rather play our starters most of the game b/c having a week off can throw off your rhythm, so it would be best to keep them in as much as possible. However-if you have to go into the playoffs the following week, at least some rest in the last week game would be preferred.
