Hi is anybody here trying to lose weight as well?

Last week I nearly hit 300 lbs and ran into a girl I used to date in high school who looked at me like she was in shock. Now I'm down to 289. In high school (about 10 years ago), my weight was around 180-185 and I had a really toned and fit physique. How long should it take me to get back there? I've been over 250 for about a year now and I'm sick and tired of it. Can I lose a lb a day and be where I want to be in about 100 days? Its embarrassing because right now I don't even feel comfortable dating while I'm this heavy. In high school I never had a problem with it, but since I've let my weight go my confidence around the women has gone down considerably.

A pound a day is asking for the impossible. Once you start a diet, depending on what you are doing, you will lose a lot of weight at first. But as the body notices that the food supply is slowing down, it will try to hold onto the fat that is already there. At least, thats what happens to me.
What kind of diet are you doing and did you consult a Dr. before you started?

No I haven't consulted a Dr. Right now I'm drinking lots of water, cutting out junk food, and waiting until at least 3 or 4 PM each day to eat. I've started walking as well. What scares me is this:

First day I went from 296 to 292
Second day: 292 to 290
Third day: 290 to 289

Now I'm at 289 and its becoming alot harder to drop a pound a day.

Your first couple days you drop water weight which is the easy part. if you don't eat or cut back so drastically your body will do the oppsite of what you want. IE it will begin to burn muscle, which isn't good also muscle is what burns the calories.

I'd suggest figure your normal calorie in take and more importantly fat intake. Cut your total if your over 3000 I'd cut it back to about 2500 if you are between 2500-3000 I'd take it closer to 2000 and cut out as much FAT calories as possible they are harder to burn.

I'd start slow on the exercising if you jump in to hard you will never stick with it. Me I walk 15 min twice a day some days more in a weak or two increase the time. Also vary your exercises if not your body won't respond as well. Remember Muscle burns more calories than anything so lifting light weights to tone the muscle will help. I know you hate it but Crunchs will help a lot build your stomach muscles to help burn calories and fat around your waist.

Something that I have heard to do is at the end of the weak reward your self if you've kept to your diet and exersise. I'm not saying eat 5000 calories but enjoy a nice dinner with real dressing and have a decent desert. most important is to stick with it. If you want a real wake up call go to your DR and get you cholestrol checked and I'm willing to bet its in a very high range which should be motivation to lose weight.

That won't work.

The key is to eat several small, healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. You need to learn a new lifestyle, and if you restrict yourself and starve yourself, as soon as you reach your goal and start eating you'll blow back up.

You need cardio and resistance training, because your body will try to hold onto the fat, and you will lose muscle mass instead. You will weigh less, but you may actually be fatter percentage-wise.

Water, supplements to make sure you get all the stuff your body needs, fruit and veggies, chicken, fish, beans, and only lean red meat. Avoid sugar and simple carbs.

Very your daily calories too. If you eat 800 calories every day, your body will adjust to that and only burn that and you'll get stuck struggling to lose. On a day where you double up on working out, increase your calories that day. The next week do it the day after a hard work out. Shock your system and keep it guessing.

And give yourself a treat day once in awhile. Eat those peanut M&M's, cake or ice cream cone, just don't go crazy with it.

If you have a friend that could lose a few too, enlist their help. It is a lot easier to stick to something hard if you aren't doing it alone.

As someone who has to battle it too, hang in there and good luck.

I got lazy a few of years back.. I went from 185 to 240... I was NOT a happy camper...

I went on Atkins and lost 50 pounds in 3.5 months... and I never felt better in my life... the nice thing about Atkins is that you can easily order in any restaurant without much problem...

There are many good diets. Even though you are a skins fan, we want you to succeed... healthfully...

I have many tips as how to succeed at Atkins... pm me anytime...

I wish you well...

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words. I have a goal to get from 289 to 185 by May 15. Do you think that's realistic if I run every day and hit the gym hard?

That's really good, how much exercising did you have to do and have you been able to keep it off?

You can drop 20 -40 lbs in the 1st month or so but after that it will start to come off slow. you will need to shock your body and change up your routine to get it going.

The strange thing is... not a bit...

I used to be a workout warrior... but I slipped in my old age...

The key to the Atkins is to follow it to the T... it seems weird eating butter and the likes...

I had ribeyes every day for lunch and dinner... and the pounds melted off...

I had the nay-sayers that told me to watch my cholesteral, but it actually dropped... weird stuff... but it darn sure works...

I had my physical 3 weeks ago and my doctor mailed me the results... he wrote that I had the results of a teenager... A+

...dropping weight that fast. Everyone is unique and what works for one may not for you. You really need to get to a Dr. and possibly some others who can help monitor you during this period.

You don't want to trigger any physical episodes in your life. Best of luck to your endeavor. You won't regret a choice for a healthier lifestyle.

Best of luck to you.

I would suggest not to watch the scales every single day, but change your lifestyle.

Does that make sense ?

What I mean is, not to make the scales the object of your weight loss, but make whatever method you choose the object.

And stick to it.

I don't know about many diets, but I know that the daily exercise is the key.

Even briskly walking for 30 - 45 minutes every day. (but build up to that)

Once again, good luck, ... you mention being embarassed and having lost confidence, if you are able to pull this off, you will take care of both of those issues because it will boost your self esteem just knowing that you had the discipline to stick to it.

When I got out of the military 5 years ago, I was 179 13% BF. Not great, but not too bad either. Now 5 years later, i'm 240 and probably 30 -40% BF, completely awful. Whatever you do, if you work out, ween yourself off of it. Measure your caloric input and output, and balance them.

Skipping breakfast is the worst thing you can do, and a terrrible habbit I have picked up. There are several people who will tell you differently, but when you are sleeping, your body slows down your caloric consumption because you are not fueling it. So naturaly when you wake up in the morning, your still "fasting". Eating something as little as a half a slice of toast will kick start your metabolism in the morning, getting you burning calories right away. It takes fuel to burn fuel. It's not the be all end all of weight loss, but it does help.

You lost all that weight and then slowed because you shocked your body. And now it is in fasting mode. It is going hang onto every calorie you consume for the next few days and your weight loss is going to go nowhere.

Blindzebra had a valid point, eating several small "meals" throughout the day really does help with weight loss, ask TrickBlue, I bet he felt like he was eating all day long. Atkins scares me though, and if you suspect you have heart problems, seek a doctor's advice before you try it, it can seriously affect your health if your body can't handle it and your not using it properly.

Don't set yourself up for failure. It took ten years to get you to 300, its going to take a little while to get back down... There is lots of good advice here, the important thing is to find what works for you and stick to it. It's a life style thing, not something you can do for a little while then go back to the way you were before you started...

Anyway, just my two cents. I am starting my battle on Monday, looking forward to it :D!

Anybody else just start getting emails from a dietician about losing weight after posting in this thread about losing weight.

I have received two just since I posted on here this morning.

Our dietician has answered your question;

Answer:

Your question is a common question, and I have 2 answers.

1.
Losing weight in a short length of time (1-2weeks) can be
very dangerous if not approached correctly.

2.
There are several solutions on the market today, but only
few are safe. We have been using MS Hoodia at our
clinic and highly reccommend it. MS Hoodia will be
in most heath stores come April of 2006.

Our clinic currently purchases it from an online supplier:

I hope this has answered your question(s).

What is up with that ?

Did someone put my email on some list ?

Something I forgot.

Getting enough sleep is important too. Your muscles need time to recover from that increased exercise, and with all the changes you are putting your body through, your immune system could suffer if you don't get your sleep.

A healthy weight loss early is 3-4 pounds a week, mainly because you burn more when you exercise because of all the extra weight. After that initial big loss your body starts adjusting to the changes, and 1-2 pounds a week would be a reasonable goal.

More than that and it usually means that instead of a lifestyle change you are using drastic measures, and that will set you up to yo-yo back when you reach your goal.

I lost about 30 pounds over the last 6 months and was all proud of myself because I thought it was because of my new eating habits and exercise routine but it turns out I'm having some medical problems and the weight loss may have been sped up by it. It figures.

Its possible for your body to still want to be in fasting mode even when there is still alot of fat left to burn? I mean I can understand it trying to hold onto every calorie for someone with no fat...but isn't the purpose of fat to be long term energy storage for when we don't eat?
