Hi is anybody here trying to lose weight as well?

Last week I nearly hit 300 lbs and ran into a girl I used to date in high school who looked at me like she was in shock. Now I'm down to 289. In high school (about 10 years ago), my weight was around 180-185 and I had a really toned and fit physique. How long should it take me to get back there? I've been over 250 for about a year now and I'm sick and tired of it. Can I lose a lb a day and be where I want to be in about 100 days? Its embarrassing because right now I don't even feel comfortable dating while I'm this heavy. In high school I never had a problem with it, but since I've let my weight go my confidence around the women has gone down considerably.

I would say try to lose about 75 pounds but add muscle. The added muscle will allow you more calories in your diet.

Eating right, drinking water and all the things suggested above will help immensely.

For most folks cutting sodas and junk food/fast food will do the trick over the long haul with only minimal cardio.

I usually skip breakfast myself which is a horrid habit but I go to work at 4:45 a.m. and am just not hungry. I started drinking a weight gaining protein shake. Sounds crazy to lsoe weight drinking a weight gaining shake but at 130calories it makes a great meal substitution and gets something in my belly so my metabolism doesn't go to sleep.

there are no secrets. diet and excerzice regularly. ask any friend who is fit and over the age of 30. 30 minutes a day. eat red meat twice a month. cut down on cigarretes and alcohol. drink plenty of water. avoid carbonated drinks and fried food. nobody is reinventing the wheel.

Twice a MONTH?!

I'm about about twice a DAY right now. I'd go crazy if I could eat red meat twice a month. I think I can handle twice a week, but twice a month would be like asking me to walk on water... it ain't gonna happen.

Another option for cardio is high intensity interval training. It is a great way to burn calories/fat without burning as much muscle. It also takes a lot less time to do.

If you're going to a gym and want to use a machine that can help you burn a lot of calories, use the eliptical (sp?). It puts very little (if any) pressure on your joints (ankles/knees) and you can burn a lot of calories w/o feeling like you burned a lot of calories.

I had to use an eliptical in the offseason cuz of turf toe and was still able to lose 15 lbs (and I gained muscle so I lost a lot of fat) using that machine. It really helped me get my endurance up w/o putting the strain on my toe, ankles and knees that jogging does.

Hey guys, i just saw this thread, havent been on this site too much lately cause ive been to busy.

anyway, i am a licensed dietitian so if any one wants to ask some questions pm me, i dont check the site every day right now but i will try to get back quickly. Been working in the medical field and Im working in a dialysis center so i know about different dietary adjustments that need to be made for medical conditions too.

A lot of people gave good advice in this thread already. There is no way you can lose a lb a day and keep that up so forget that right now, but what does it really matter if it takes you a year or more to get to your goal, you have to start somewhere so you may as well make a commitment to yourself and start now. as long as you make continuous progress you will eventually get there.

Also, intresting what Trick said about the atkins diet, i remember a lot of dietitians were up in arms over that and telling everyone about the dangers and the cardiac problems and so forth.....but almost everyone i know who has tried atkins has had success if they do it right and are committed AND their cholesterol often improves, that is kind of weird but then again nutritionis a relatively new science and a lot of the old myths are being debunked right now.

For the record, i am not saying you should do atkins or advising this for you because i dont know your history and so forth, but just adding that a lot of people do have success with this. However there are other diets that work well too.

But i would answer questions if anyone wants to pm me about eating for wt loss or maintaining a healthy diet, i am a pretty liberal dietitian though so i will let you know that up front and i follow a pretty normal intake my self. I will not be recommending strict vegetarian or restricted intakes, just sensible sound information that you can use however you like.

Also, a recent study found that it does matter what time of day you eat and that your biggest meal should be in the morning, not in the evening. A group of people followed a 2000 /day calorie diet in which they ate all 2000 calories either for breakfast or for dinner, so they only ate one meal a day. For 6 weeks they ate 2000 calorie breakfast and lost weight, then for 6 weeks they ate 2000 calorie dinner and gained weight back, and then some. so eat more early then at night.

Hey everyone, I'm down about 15 lbs from when I first started this thread. The trouble I'm having now, is that after I walk or do some exercise, I feel even hungrier and thirstier then before! I also feel entitled to eat after I work out hard. So the past few days I haven't lost any more weight. Its getting frustrating.
