I'm not an audiosnob by any stretched (as evidenced by my opinion that the chatter over how terrible Dre's are is way overblown), but recommending Bose as a "revolutionary" alternative to Dre's would get you ridiculed by most audiophiles.
For me the bottom line is listen to what you can afford and what sounds good. Whether it's Monster, Denon, Bose or otherwise, you're going to pay a bit for cache.
I wasn't trying to be an Audiophile snob either although I was a professional sound man for a time... just trying to save some members a buck or two...
Bose hasn't been in the headphone industry since the inception, but they have always been revolutionary... they are THE first choice in noise cancelling technology... and LONG ruled the compact industry. There are other competitors now in the compact market. I would also look at Bob Carver's Sunfire stuff as well as they late great Henry Kloss' Cambridge Soundworks equipment...
Amar Bose created the famous Bose 901 speakers. A bookshelf size offering that used porting like was never seen before. The 901 series had an intricate architecture of piped ports, that made them sound like floor speakers. Wind speed in these ports registered over 100 mph... the result was unheard of bass rivaling 15" subs out of a 4" offering. Of course, in this day and age it has been matched, but it took 30 years to do so...
I agree with you on taking a listen. Beats sound just fine, but I have heard better for just $50... I just want to encourage buyers not to buy Beats for the name or coolness factor... they just aren't that good in regards to the price. They would be VERY good $30-$75 headphones, but Klipsch, especially, leaves them in the dust... with malice...
