Luepke to play big role in offense - again?

Oh, you're one of those. Dak put the ball in Hunter's breadbasket and he dropped it. Dak coughs up the ball plenty but that one was all Hunter Luepke.
You can't fumble the ball if you never possess the ball. That is true for every player in the league. Look up Luepke's stats and you won't find any fumble from him. You claim he is a fumbler, but there is zero evidence to support that.

The reason the Cowboys traded for Mingo was two fold. One, they had a 2nd round grade on him and could get him for a 4th. Two, they knew they weren't bringing Cooks back and Mingo could replace him this year. Both of those facts are straight from the FO.
The Cowboys would have never traded for Mingo had Tolbert took the job away from Cooks. He got 6 starts when Cooks was injured and although he didn’t play poorly, he had a couple of drops and wasn’t as productive as we were hoping for. There was some inconsistency with him. Miles Austin got an opportunity years ago due to an injury to Roy Williams and took the job from him in only one game. It was obvious to everyone that Tolbert wasn’t a WR2 and that prompted the trade for Mingo.

We all knew Cooks would be gone after the season so the team was seriously looking for a WR2. Our first pick would have been a WR but the one we targeted was off the board. The Cowboys weren’t going to trade a 4th for Mingo simply because they had a 2nd round grade on him. They were hoping he could be their WR2 but we got hardly anything out of him. Had he produced like Amari did when we traded for him we would have never traded for Pickens.

You're lying about him never possessing the ball. I have seen the video in slow motion several times. Dak put the ball in his breadbasket clear as day. It just fell out. You must be the president of the Dak haters club.

The league disagrees with you.

I get that Luepke is a FB but I don't see a scenario in which Luepke and Mahfa both make the 53-man squad.

According to Pro-Football-Reference Mahfa and Lepke are the same weight and height.

I think they are competing against each other with Mahfa perhaps having more upside as a runner, but Luepke has also been important on ST,

My preference would be Mahfa because it would signal an upgrade at the position.

I don't see how there could be so much excitement for a 3rd year undrafted FB with a total of 18 carries for 57 yards and 1 TD.

Also, I have noticed that, unlike Jerry Jones, coaches are very guarded about the information they divulge to the media. Some of them even tend to just go with the journalist's narrative.

What question was Schottenheimer responding to?

"Who do you think will get an increased role in your offense?"

or

"Tell us about your plans for Luepke, Will we see him on a larger role this season?"

Some questions seem to dictate the answer.

Dallas hasn't used a FB creatively since Moose Johnston.

49ers used Kyle Juszczyk very creatively and effectively. Hunter Luepke is no Kyle Juszczyk, but I think he's just athletic enough that he should be used in the short yardage passing game.

Frankly, with Lamb, Pickens, and Ferguson out there, the RBs/FB could have a tiny bit more space to work as pass catchers.

Here we go with that again.

Answer this - when was he given a chance?

Here you go again. He was targeted 16 in 6 games. That’s being given a chance in my book. When you get an opportunity players have to make the most of it. Ask Miles Austin.

Mingo was targeted 42 times for 17 catches and 167 yards.

Hes the only player in football to receive more than 31 targets and put up less than 200 yards. Turpin had just 6 more targets than Mingo did last season and went for 420 yards. When Mingo did catch the football he still ranked 105 out of 112 players in yards per catch. I'm still trying to figure out what Mingo is really good at. He doesn't put up anything after the catch, nor does he catch a high percentage of footballs. He caught 51% of balls his rookie season on 83 attempts, 44% year 2 with Carolina, and that dropped to 33% with the Cowboys. Even if we want to look at the QBs of those teams, he still ranked last on both teams. Adam Thielen didn't have a tough time bringing in 78% of his targets. JaTavion Sanders 76%, the rookies Legette did 60%, Coker 71%. Even Diontea Johnson who had maybe the worst year of his career brought in 52% of his targets. For the Cowboys the only player under 50% in catch% aside from Mingo was Brooks at 40%...not exactly the best company to be in.

Honestly for a team that was pretty thin at WR last year after Lamb, and seeing Lamb miss multiple games it should speak volumes to the fact that Mingo didn't get more opportunities in 2024 with the Cowboys.

Good post, Hopefully this new coaching staff can get more creative with Luepke, he is a good football player who can get you a crucial first down in short yardage and in the short passing game.I think Schottenheimer will get more out of Luepke than McCarthy did.

I really don't expect huge changes from the offense other than just having a better roster this season. Luepke played a pretty heavy role down the stretch last year, and they lined him up all over. Watching games back I was shocked at how often he is lined up at TE and even in the slot. He was a 20-30 snap guy most weeks on offense plus ST work on top of that.

Bad news for guys like Sanders, Mafah, Vaughn if Luepke is a lock to make the team. Probably means there is just one spot left between the three of them.
Luepke is a decent utility guy. Id like to see him get 25 or so catches. He averaged almost 10 yards a catch last year, which is really good for the typw of player he is
