LVE at Sam?

I personally believe LVE is better built to handle the Mike position and all traffic in between the Tackles better than Jaylon could. Body-wise, LVE has a bigger and thicker frame than Jaylon, so I don't understand why Marinelli has the smaller framed LB playing MLB while the bigger one is playing OLB? Makes no sense.

It's funny to read someone say Jaylon is too small to play MLB

That's not what I said, and you know it. I said LVE is the bigger one of the two and obviously more physically suited to play MLB.

Right you don't think Jaylon is physically suited to play the position

Understand English? Never said that. If LVE was not in the picture, of course you play Jaylon at MLB. But since LVE is here, you don't play your biggest stud LB on the outside where he can be sectioned off. Plus, why risk Jaylon playing in the middle and having to deal with incoming linemen when he's fresh from recovering from a very serious knee and leg injury that almost cost him his career? Keep the faster/quicker Jaylon on the outside the way Campo used Dexter Coakley, with the bigger/thicker/stronger LVE (Dat Nguyen) inside.

Jaylon is not a stud.....I'm learning a lot today

Sit on the carpet.

They are good enough to be moved around If all 3 stay healthy our linebackers are gonna be bad boys
Perfectly put. Lve is a monster and jaylon was a top 3 pick before injury. Both are learning from an all pro hands on. This could be a fantastic lb core like the miners of years ago

we need a lb that has the ability to blitz. that would seem to be Jaylon. he's fast and moves best in a straight line.

I think both will play mike and Jaylon will be used more at strong side in rush situations. Not to worry Kelz, they'll both get lots of snaps

Ohhhhhh "flexibility"............ the obsession with these defensive coaches................ How about just pick a ******* LB spot for these guys and play them at it?

All this cross training seems to give us is average players at various positions instead of really good players at one position.

Rod's world.

IMO, he'll do all sorts of crazy stuff with Jaylon, 99% chance he plays all 3 spots this year.

Nickel = Lee/Smith. For now

4-3 = Smith at SAM, LVE at Mike

Nickel future or Lee is injured = Smith at WILL, LVE at Mike

If Jaylon plays MLB in 4-3 defense, it's probably because LVE isnt ready for it yet

81 tackles, 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles with a brace that affected his mobility laterally. No one has EVER been able to play with the brace and the kid was the second highest rated LB on our team last season. If LVE puts up the same numbers it would be considered a great year and make him worth the first round pick.

No one has ever been able to play with a brace? What are you smoking?

LVE needs to be in the easiest of the LB positions for his rookie year. Set him up for success.

DAL only plays about 15-20 snaps in the base with a SAM

It is normally a throw away position for Marinelli.....big guy that can take on the run head on, cover TEs and occasionally rush(something JSmith would thrive at)

JSmith at SAM with LVE at MIKE and SLee at WILL would be ideal but may be too much for LVE right away

DWilson is fine for the base SAM and then JSmith and SLee will play Nickel
LVE will work in at MIKE and SAM and some WILL with injuries

JThomas is also a capable back-up at multiple spots

They seem hell bent on making Smith a MIKE.

I think it's a mistake.
tbf ive only heard media *ahem Calvin* speculate that Vander Esch will be the Will

think he assumes that because Vander Esch is calling plays in 2nd team and Jaylon takes mike reps in 1st team

but Marinelli himself has said twice now he wants them to compete for mike, he wants a 3 man rotation for 2 spots and we havent seen either of them move to Will yet -its only 1 week in
they have Vander Esch calling plays so he learns the defense faster
right now they are prob just directly comparing film on how each move and react at mike but at some point they will decide which will be Lees replacement and we will see that guy take reps there

im with you i rather see Jaylon at Will or Sam until Lee retires

I just cringe when you see this talk of cross training and having them learn all these LB spots. It inevitably leads to guys who are average at multiple positions instead of really good at one.

Put LVE through the crash course........... start him at MIKE, put Smith at SAM and then when practicing nickel, Lee and Smith are your guys and you work LVE with the 2nd team.

Hopefully, this first week or two is just about getting feet wet and as we progress through camp, Marinelli starts putting these guys in one spot and allows them to focus on that spot.

PS - If your first round pick can't start, then you made a fairly poor choice with that pick.

No offense AC but I think it makes perfect sense. LVE has not played a down yet. I think he will take the position eventually but not just yet. jmho

Maybe cuz LVE is better in coverage than Jaylon? Jaylon looked baaaad in coverage last season. Maybe it was the knee, maybe not.

Sean Lee is an excellent Mike linebacker

this is early in his career, @:28 watch how he sees the play. as soon as he sees the playaction he confirms where the tightend is going and adjusts his depth then gets eyes back on Manning

hes just as good at Will
a great linebacker can make those plays from different positions but if they moved Lee back and forth i seriously doubt he would be as great as he is now
im strongly in the let them find their fit and keep them there camp

Lee would still be Mike if his body could take the punishment

I've lobbied for them to move Lee back to MIKE earlier this offseason. I know why they moved him to WILL but at this point, it might make sense to move him back to MIKE, let Smith play WILL (which might be his best position) and let LVE play SAM.
