Justin Beriault is no better deep than anybody else we have put back there. Hes much better around the line...like Roy. He will not be starting on this team any time soon, or ever.

no i think JB has a good chance of starting next year over keith davis, you know that parcells has to like what the kid brings since we kept him even though he was hurt.
i really believe that he will start over davis, JB is pretty good at coverage and as long as we put in Reeves(who's getting better and better) on obvious deep passing plays, then JB will be great as the Cowboys FS he is a ball hawk and a playmaker i can't wait to see #40 make some plays for us!

Check out Beriault's stats versus some other high profile FS and CBs...pretty AMAZING, if you ask me:

Stats in red indicate 1st or 2nd best!

Justin Beriault, Ball State (
6-2¾, 204)
Had a complete workout at the combine. Ran his 40s in 4.52 and 4.57, had a
39½-inch vertical jump, 11-foot long jump, 3.80 short shuttle, 10.82 long shuttle, 6.92 three-cone drill and did 14 reps.

Brodney Pool, Oklahoma (
6-1, 207)
Did not work out at the combine. He ran his 40s in 4.53 and 4.55. Had a 39-inch vertical jump,
10-foot-8 long jump, 4.30 short shuttle and 7.19 three-cone drill.

Sean Considine, Iowa (6-0 1/8,
212)
Had a complete workout at the combine. Ran his 40s in 4.50 and 4.54. Had a 37-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-9 long jump, 3.92 short shuttle,
10.65 long shuttle, 7.09 three-cone drill and did 19 strength reps.

Josh Bullocks, Nebraska (6-0,
209)
Had a complete workout at the combine. Ran the 40 in 4.46 and 4.49. Had a 37½-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-10 long jump, 4.08 short shuttle,
10.82 long shuttle, 7.09 three-cone drill and did 13 strength reps.

Antrel Rolle, Miami (Fla.) (6-0 1/8, 201)
Rolle did not work out at the combine, except for doing 15 bench presses. He worked out at Miami's Pro Day, clocking 4.52 twice in the 40 on grass. He had a 37-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-3 long jump, ran 4.04 in the short shuttle, 11.48 long shuttle and
6.70 in the three-cone drill.

Adam "Pacman" Jones, West Virginia (5-9½, 187)
Jones did not work out at the combine, but did so at West Virginia's Pro Day. He ran the 40s in
4.38 and 4.41. He had a 38½-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot long jump and did nine strength reps.

Carlos Rogers, Auburn (6-0 3/8, 196)
Rogers had a complete workout at the combine. He ran two 40s in 4.44 and 4.46. He also ran
3.82 in the short shuttle, 10.96 in the long shuttle and 6.70 in the cone drill. He had a 40½-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-6 broad jump and did 11 bench presses.

I agree that JB seems like a player who'll be around the ball, but to call him a ballhawk when we only have a handful of preseason games to judge him by...well, that's just insane.

Here's a crazy thought. How about drafting an actual FS in the draft instead of having a revolving door of SS play out of position. Crazy. I know.

Davis had a nice game...didnt make any great plays but did lay some wood in the 1st half which seemed to get folks going. Roy, BTW, was busy making ankle tackles while Keith was sticking (or at least trying) his helmet into folks.

Nice ST play as well from Davis.

Upgrade, sure please but this was a better game of his.

This is crazy talk but...

What if we draft what turns out to be a stud FS(Huff, Landry etc), Beriault turns out to be a good player at SS. Is it then possible that Roy moves to LOLB?

I probably watched him play 20 times on tv while at Ball state, and saw him twice in person. It is safe to call him a Ball Hawk and not so INSANE.

yes perhaps we could draft a fs....i suppose

but i still like JB there.

possibly, but then we are giving up alot of girth in the front 7. But the coverage and blitzing possiblilities are outstanding!

I posted a similar thought a while back, comparing Roy to Derrick Brooks of Tampa (size-wize anyway). We were still playing the 4-3 at the time however, and I don't think Roy will ever be big enough for the current 3-4.

yea i agree maybe in some passing downs just put him in there as one of the two linebackers, after of course we have people who are better in deep coverage. for now he is our 4th or 5th best cover guy deep

Didn't he record like 4 interceptions during his whole collegiate career, one each year? Hardly a ballhawk.

And what a player does in school doesn't mean a whole lot till he can prove he can do the same in the pros. That was the only point I was trying to make.

If I remember correctly, however, he was a tackling machine in school. Not a bad thing.

I really like his potential as ST contributor and as someone who can step in for Roy if he were to get injured. I am not counting on him as an answer to our FS woes however. If he turns out to be one, that'd be awesome and I'd gladly admit I was wrong, but as of now, I see JB as a very solid backup.

and whom does a tackler usually tackle? yea the ball carrier aka ball hawk. If Ball hawk means int. then nope he isn't but always making plays he is/was/hopefully will

Beriault is too slow to play FS. Period. There is no discussion here.

My bad. Silly me always thought a ballhawk was a DB who intercepted or broken up a lot of passes.

Berry-O is a SS not a FS.

Wait a minute, top 10 pick DB Antrell Rolle plays CB and runs the same 40 time as Justin Berriault.

Our starting FS is currently not on our roster.

In the first 3 rounds of the draft, we need to walk away from it w/ a WR/OL/FS.

Wrong. Rolle runs a 4.49, Beriault a 4.59. Furthermore, Rolle is considered a solid cover corner not because of his speed but because of his athletic play-making ability.

In any case, speed (which Berry-O doesn't have) doesn't make the FS. There's also that thing called coverage ability factored in, which Beriault doesn't possess either. He can't turn his hips and run with WR's very well and he has trouble reading developing pass plays. He is a poor man's Roy Williams and nothing more.
