I've played about 4 games so far myself and can't say I agree. Graphics are slightly better, physics are the same (preset animations/look at players flopping over each other after plays--not physics based), atmosphere is same outside of some added commentary from Phil Simms relating to performance from the prior week "He threw 2 picks last week", etc.
The one thing I do like is the improvement on passing trajectory with the high/low pass but seems they took away the skill of controlling your receiver after the pass as it is centered on you holding down buttons for the corresponding catches. I still take control of the receiver but notice I don't really have to anymore outside of coming back for curls more aggressively when I realize a corner is sitting on the route, etc. I shared your same optimism last year bc they did make a good jump to next gen. but as usually the case with Madden, piecemeal improvements with updated rosters. Games sorely needs a new engine as Pessimist said above.
