These Lakers were never considered a possible Dream Team. Most rational people had them fighting for a low seed in the West
LAL fans have had them as a Dream Team every off-season for this entire decade.
They've literally presumed every big-name FA would sign there.
So it's all about perspective.
Realistically, most people had them a 4-7 seed. You can see that on the posts from pre-season or the NBA 2019 threads.
NO ONE was predicting they'd fail to make the playoffs as they were an improving team that was ready to challenge for a 7-8 seed BEFORE LBJ.
The front office incompetence was shocking as I detailed many times.
They lost pieces like Randle for NOTHING but cap space so they could sign Rondo and Stevenson??
Instead of trading a key piece of their young core to get better they instead cut it off at the knees but held it driving it's value down.
Right now BI is at an all-time low value coming off injury.
Lonzo is viewed as a "system" fit guy with Daddy issues.
The only guy who's value has really grown is Kuz.
So they gotta decide to either keep those dudes to give them up for 70 cents on the dollar.
Getting 70 cents on the dollar for a guy you tanked all year for is BRUTAL.
Missing the playoffs with a guy who has carried lottery teams to the playoffs on his back alone is even worse.
Magic and LAL fans have had the same problems. They think saying we are the Lakers is enough to win games and free agents. But it's simply not even close.
You gotta win little deals and add pieces that fit based on analytics(not sure to this day Magic has even heard of that).
You gotta build 2-3 windows at a time and stop relying on winning the off-season by signing a big fish.
Yes, it worked for GSW but that team was great BEFORE they won franchise free agents.
They built a system and culture that drew KD.
LAL needs to build a culture and pick a system.
The biggest thing LAL couldn't do was have Rich Paul become asst GM. That was always going to backfire big-time.
Anytime someone obtains power far above the norm their will be a harsh correction.
