Less as a percent of the salary cap over the period of the contract(s).
    • Mahomes' Contract
      • Mahomes new money is 450M over 10 years with the 10 years starting in 2022.
      • The NFL salary cap has increased on average 6.52 percent over the past 10 years.
      • Using the same 6.52 percent, the NFL cap projects to average 303.76M the 10 year period.
      • Mahomes 45M average is 14.8 percent the projected NFL cap.
    • Dak's Contract
      • A 5 year contract for Dak at 35M would be 16.4 percent of the projected cap.
      • If Dak's agent wants to use Mahomes' contract as a basis for a 5 year contract for Dak:
        • 33.5M over 5 years is the same 14.8 percent of the cap as Mahomes' contract.

Yep and the current offer is 36 a year. I think they want the perception of looking like it’s top dollar. It’s not just about the player but also the agent. If your looking for a agent then you want the one getting the players paid the most. It’s about the 5th year. I think he will look at this contract and sign it. Or lose money and hope that jackson or watson gets paid more than mahomes.. His agent is playing a dangerous game..

Because Mahomes realizes there's not that much one amount could buy him that the other couldn't and less pay means more talent they're able to keep and make multiple runs, securing his name in NFL history.

Mahomes signed a fair deal for him but screwed the quarterbacks when it comes to future free agency. I don’t think any quarterback will get a deal close to Mahomes. Like I said before Dak would be crazy to turn down 100 million guaranteed. This year he banged up his shoulder. Who knows what the future holds. He will sign the contract.

This whole situation is strange. The closest analog I can think of is the Kirk Cousin’s situation in Washington. I honestly don’t know if this is more a matter of the Cowboys not being sold on Dak or Dak asking for an absurd amount.

pretty simple. The FO doesn’t feel like Dak is worth what he’s asking for. Weather it’s the years or the money is irrelevant. The FO is Dug in. And I hope they stay that way. They bent over for tank, jaylon, Dez, Zeke. The list of bad contracts is pretty long

While an interesting mathmatical way to model it the problem is the cap (before the world fell apart) was not going to be going up in a linear method. For example it was anticipated originally that the cap for next year would go up by 20-30 million with another boost coming once they added that 17th game. Basically the cap is not likely to go up in a linear format because of the incentives in the new CBA that are largely front loaded. Now as the world did fall apart it does sort of make it hard to model what exactly will happen but even if you assume a flat cap the next 2 years before the big explosion there will certainly be a big explosion in the next 2-3 years before falling back in line to the 5-7% increase average.

Also there is the note that about 4-5 years into the extension they are almost certainly going to have to renegotiate a new one just to deal with the 60 million dollar cap hit. That will likely come with another raise to ensure Mahomes stays as the NFL's top paid player for the majority of his extension. This also makes it hard to honestly model out the contract when the true value is unknown. We can know the floor but not the ceiling.

Yeah he definetly screwed over Lamar, Dak and Watson for sure......Watson could salvage this because Texans are desperate enough to reset the market again.

Don't give this front office credit like they did this intuitionally. They are being stubborn because they want Dak on a 5 year deal and not a 4 year deal. Had they signed him last year they could've got him on a 5 year deal. They are trying to salvage their mistake and using Dak to do it.

True but an agent is going to test the Joneses as well. I believe France wants a crazy contract.

I think he does too. I don't think this deal gets hung up on a on a 4 or 5 year deal.

    Yep
I’ve been saying that all along.
I figured once xw took a close look he’d see it for sure
    :flagwave:

Just a very team friendly deal by Mahomes to better insure that he has a better team around him long term

Yep. Gives them crap to talk about. I could very well be wrong but if the deals are as fair as been reported then he gets signed on the 15th.

They got Dak for 2 million last year.
I’d hardly say that was a mistake

He was under contract. I'm saying the mistake was not signing him prior to last season. Instead, they keep pushing back the inevitable. If you are going to sign him why wouldn't you do it at 28-30 million as opposed to the number now that's ballooned to as high as 37-40 million?

He should've been re-signed with a year left on his deal.

    They offered him 33/year.

He turned it down. So, what was the mistake?

They offered at least 30/yr last year. Some say as high as 33

Anyway, I see what your saying.
Obviously, if he signs for 40 this year (which I very highly doubt) then paying 32 last year would’ve been worth it if we run the numbers.
But if they get him one more year at 31 (so average 16.5 for 2019 and 2021) and then sign him at 4 years for 38-40/yr.....they come out well.

Im guessing that he signs in the 3 days,it'd be more in 35-36 range.

Both parties are fine if he just plays on the tag. Not ideal, but it works

I finally looked it up, it was easily accessible. 33 was the offer.
