With Jake Ferguson coming off somewhat of a down season, can you see Luke Schoonmaker challenging him for the starting tight end position? – Reuben Johnson/Nashville, TN
Patrik:
I do believe there's potential for Schoonmaker to be a solid starter in the league for a team that utilizes his skill set in such a way as to maximize that fit, but it's also true that Jake Ferguson owns attributes better suited to what Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys are hoping to get from a TE1 — e.g., YAC ability. Schoonmaker made major strides in 2024, when Ferguson dealt with a knee injury and a concussion,

The top two guys aren’t superstars but I don’t see the position as a weakness.

Ferguson is a good player and Schoon filled in well when he had the shot.

Maybe people will be happy with better numbers when the Lamb/Pickens combo opens up those opportunities.

There’s plenty more to worry about on this team than the current TE room.

He could emerge, but anyone can. We lack a true top flight te.

Year 3 is about when tight ends start putting it together, so it's Schoon's time if there's ever going to be one.

BSF is a guy I have high hopes for too. I think he could be a future starting-caliber player.

He needs to focus on trying to keep TE2.

From what I've read, he has his hands full competing with Span-Ford for #2, so no where near competing for #1 TE spot.

..Fergs needs to work on his hands technique. Saw to many dropped balls. Then came some fumbles.

Pure speculation is all that is. BSF had a couple of days in underwear Olympics and people annointing him. Let's remember his drop pass rate was over 26%. (9 drops/34 catchable passes) He still needs to show he can consistently catch the ball.

For comparison School was 5% drop rate (2 drops/ 37 catchable passes)

These are PFF numbers.

Schoon could be closer than what we realize. Ferg looked off last year, I’m assuming injuries played a big part in that. If he looks off again this year, then absolutely yes.
