Mailbag: Effects Of Losing Bill Callahan? Considering QB In The Next Draft?
Tuesday, September 22, 2015 9:37 AM CDT

CAMERON JOHN
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK

How much of the offensive line's struggles so far could be attributed to losing Bill Callahan to the Commanders, who are running pretty well so far, rather than losing Murray to the Eagles?

David: It’s a valid point, in my opinion. The Commanders are rushing for a whopping 4.6 yards per carry and 171 yards per game, while the Cowboys sit at a pedestrian 3.4 yards per carry and 94.5 yards per game. I still think it’s a bit of a small sample size, though. The Cowboys have played two games, and in those two games they’ve fallen behind by double digits and lost their starting quarterback – both of which are factors that might affect the ground game. There’s no question that it needs to improve, though – especially with Tony Romo sitting out. A great place to start would be to clean up the penalty issues.

Rob: The numbers don’t show it, but the backs ran well with the space they had against the Eagles. It’s not an easy defense to run against – DeMarco Murray had 51 carries for 154 yards (3.0 average) in two games last year. Combine that with the penalties and a lot of the two-minute stuff they were in against the Giants, and the backs have been in some odd situations so far. That being said, yes, Bill Callahan has pretty much delivered in the run game wherever he’s been and it’s working in Washington so far. Cowboys offensive line coach Frank Pollack was involved with the scheme here under Callahan and I think things will loosen up. But it’s a point well taken because they’ve got to help out Brandon Weeden going forward.

I think it will be difficult to improve the run game by a lot. Teams will stack the box and dare Weeden to throw it. This is why I've said Weeden needs to step it up.

This is actually good for Weeden.

if Quincy Carter can beat coverages under these same circumstances I would have to think that Weeden could beat some of these coverages.

What we need to be worried about is the obvious passing downs... The 3rd & longs and when Weedens first read or 2 is locked up.

And we've played a game and a half without Dez to space out defenses. This isn't apples to apples for Bill or no Bill.

As to the qb draft decision....when you force it you get the Blaine Gabberts and Christian Ponders and well....the Brandon Weedens of the world as your number 1 qb.

The Cowboys will be smart about it. And frankly I approve their approach. A veteran backup and when the time is right a 'stud' at QB through the draft (this part is speculation).

These are not fair questions. Pollacks line hs 2 games with 2 divisional rivals, they came to play and the Cowboys beat them, I dont care how you do it, do it.

The second is what Dallas did themselves. Since the days of Garrett, they dont know how to take care of the back up qb. They need to sit Kellen Moore, or someone down. (someone young) Offer them a chance to be a starter BUT understand they can have a long career as a back up. They have to draft a future qb. You cant sit there and tell me "well we are banking on Romos health. You already failed. time to solve teh problem.

We'll see. Most QBs at this level have a good arm. They need to process information well and quickly as you said.
