Mailbag: trade down from 12 to add picks

There are all sorts of possibility's, some depend on how it unfolds, and what the
cowboys board looks like, and what players would they value if they can get them.
A team needs to have several plans for round one, and know what players
they really want.

Agree 100%

A slight trade down, and then package some of those 5th through 7th round picks to trade back up.
They have 7 picks in those later rounds to do so.

My fear is, as they always seem to do this. They want a player, usually ends up being a reach in the 5th. So they trade a future 5th, if not a 4th, and current 6th to get him. And may get a future 7th in return.

I think Jerry makes trades just to make trades at times. Then tell us how they got value.
Beebe may be the only one that has worked out so far. And even now, some want Hoffman to be the C.
loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool I love you some days "value" they sure as hell try to run that down our throats I hate it!!!

He's wrong. Trading down is a very good idea.

Trading down from 12 to 20 nets out more than a 4th rounder and he knows it.

There is no IF. There will be. To think the Cowboys could move down 5 spots and there not being a player with a 1st round grade is simply wrong. Teams reach every year. Players get taken early. This year won't be any different.

He seems to think that trading down is about getting a 4th round pick back. It isn't. Not at all. Trading down is just the smartest way of working the draft. The Cowboys just need more picks, period. If you aren't going to participate in FA, you have no other choice but to squeeze every single piece of asset you can from the draft.
Best post of your mod career!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If somehow Jaxon Dart(s) up the board that could push down some trade bait to the Cowboys. Anyway, good points made by the 2 writers, but I still hold out hope McClay can hit on an extra 3rd or 4th rounder.

Last season, the Cowboys turned their 24th overall pick into two starting O-linemen.

Granted they played like rookies, at times, but how much better were the two O-linemen that were drafted after the trade, between 24th and 29th? Was Graham Barton or Jordan Morgan so impressive last season that we realize trading down was a bad philosophy?

How many players had 1st round draft grades in 2012 when the Cowboys selected Morris Claiborne with the 6th overall pick? Was it five?

Perhaps Nick forgot who the GM of this organization is. The higher you draft the more pressure there is to get this one right. Do we have so much faith in Cowboys management that there is no fear putting all the eggs in one basket.

I think the Cowboys need to take as many shots as they can, because some will definitely miss.

I agree that the Cowboys have drafted Hall of Fame talent at times. However, isn't it a little unsettling that the best Cowboys players this generation were drafted because Jerry couldn't get the guys he actually wanted?

Jerry didn't want Zack Martin, He wanted Johnny Manziel. He didn't want Micah Parsons. He wanted one of the CB's taken just in front of him. He even traded down after Horn and Surtain went off the board. If Jaycee Horn was sill there at #10, Jerry would have taken him over Parsons.

Even Jimmy Johnson once admitted that having plenty of extra draft picks meant he could take risks and if trhey didn't work out, he had plenty of ammunition left.

Go look at the Patriots draft history during Belichick's time. During the 12 year period from 2008 to 2019, the Patriots had 18 2nd round picks and 19 3rd round picks. That is an average of one extra 2nd round or 3rd round pick every year for 12 years. Belichick had also said something to the effect that acquiring extra picks by trading down made his process more mistake-proof.

Of course, thee are exceptions. i am in favor of trading down unless one of the top tier players begin to slide, a la Randy Moss, Aaron Rodgers, etc.

If somebody like Mason Graham is there at #12, you obviously don't ignore the miracle by trading down.

great read and I love the analysis of the top 100 picks.

Honestly, i would be happy if they traded back a bit and picked up another top 100 pick, and then used some of their lower end picks to get another top 100. If they could walk away with 5 players in the top 100 that would be huge for the team.

They have to look at this as a two year project so they dont need "bodies" they need quality bodies...much rather have fewer picks of quality players than a huge volume of dart throws.
This makes total sense…. Which is why we will never do it… stupid Jones boys
