Mailbag: trade down from 12 to add picks

You are right but there are always teams that "fall in love" with a player and could want to move up to get him. Every team has the same trade value chart now so the price to move up or down is pretty universal. If the Cowboys want to move down a spot or two it could easily get them back into the 4th round. If they want to move down six or seven spots they can get another 3rd rounder, and so on.
Yes. You described exactly how things work on draft day. I was arguing against that team that loves a player would offer less than the trade value chart.

The Cowboys are rebuilding and aren't one player away.
This team this team has not been in a rebuild mode for a long time not when you resign your core players and Parsons is next

You'll see a rebuild when there's a new young quarterback and we're looking for quarterbacks jerry's not signing any big names their teams around the league to do that but the Cowboys have not done that in a very long time first I'll need a reset at quarterback nobody's rebuilding with their $60 million quarterback still in place they're trying to retool, reshape, with a new coaching staff hopefully they get some new players and new perspective and a new direction..

If we could just find an identity and not be all scattered when they're trying to figure out what to do on offensive defense this team will be a lot better but the windows probably two years before rebuild when we have to eat all that cap money from some of these players that we kicked the can down the road that's when it's time to rebuild..

.. That whole rebuild term went out the window when they signed Lamb and we knew after that Prescott most likely had to be signed and now that will be Parsons the rebuild would have been absolutely necessary or warranted should they have said no to dak and lamb and tried to trade them all. getting rid of lamb, parsons and diggs via trade and letting Dak Walk would have signaled that rebuild..

they went with retool...

I love it. I wish they would do it. Unfortunately, it just seems like too much work and grinding for Jerry and Stephen. They prefer to watch the draft like a fan instead of WORKING it.
Has to be someone willing to give up valuable picks(1 swap and 2 other valuable picks) to grab a single player in a bad draft.

Kinda hard to WORK IT unless there is some really dumb teams out there.

"There are always teams trying to move up" Yada Yada yada

Cowboys have traded down 2 of the last 4 drafts.
I don't know if the trade was based on current value chart or not? Did dallas only have a deal where they got raked based on value chart? Was it in line with value chart?

I just think we start seeing less trades based on current value chart.

Giving an opponent 3 chances at a starter for 4 years on a cheap rookie contract is stupid business....just because you love a player. Not even taking into account that player is a crap shoot by definition(not just qbs, every player is a crap shoot).
High end WR's/TE's and Defensive players are less risk, for sure, but still crap shoots.

It's stupid business, and if this is all real, should slow trades down. Especially giving away multiple good picks regularly for QBs who are highly vulnerable to not working out.

It's stupid. You are not able to make sense of it. You're post may be correct, I'm saying that it should all slow down with the current sentiment that trading back is smart and cost of trading up is expensive. There will be less 'desperation' and 'in love with player' trades, if all this is real.

GMs will start having egg on their face for doing what is considered stupid. Fan outrage will apply pressure on GMs to be smarter with picks

Not it isn't but they have many holes to fill. They don't need a luxury or glamour pick either. They have to build a playoff roster.

Using those top 17 picks you listed got how many playoff wins? Or are we valuing pro bowls over that now?
LOL those 4 guys were definitely not the problem.

How has trading down for Tyler Guyton worked out?
Again, if you can trade down and still draft a guy with a true R1 grade then great.
If not, it is malpractice to trade down away from R1 guys and draft a guy with an R2 grade.

The guys Dallas has drafted the last 5 years with true R1 grades have been phenomenal the rest is much more miss than hit.

Mazi and Tyler G were Round 2 grade guys with elite upside but questionable college game film.
Tyler Smith had questionable LT game film but elite skills and that has worked out beautifully but at LG not LT.

Last decade worth of Cowboys players chosen in the 20s:
Tyler Guyton 29
Mazi Smith 26
Tyler Smith 24
Taco Charlton 28
Byron Jones 27

It would be insane to have sucked this year to drop and pick a player of the hope it works out pile.

Do not trade down we have 10 that’s enough! Do not give up a top 15 player !
You are confusing 2 different issues. One, half the picks are in the last two rounds. So 10 isn't enough. Two, the Cowboys will likely be able to get the same player by trading down only get an additional pick like last year with Beebe.

The only trading up the Cowboys should consider is on day 3. They don't need 5 picks in the 6th and 7th. Unfortunately, those picks are dang near worthless.

204+211+217+239+247= only one of the last 5 picks in the 5th round is all. 170-180 range. Would you really want to give up those 5 picks to move up from 204 to 174? Just 30 spots?
The silver lining to having all those 7th rounders is we can scoop up all those players the other teams want as UDFAs and we can actually keep them on the roster because we have crap for depth!,,, yay us?

An awesome trade for the Cowboys. Guyton will be a very good/pro bowl starting LT and Beebe will be a pro bowl C for years.

Getting 2 starting OL's with the 24th pick? Another good trade the Cowboys made.
and BJ wasn't bad either. just not special.

He's leaning on too much of where players were picked versus which players were picked and forgetting the extra players we got because I see Micah Parsons two spots down and we pick up a guy like Osa we get another 3rd round pick we don't need to get into the 20s we can go down 3 to five spots and still get one of the best wide receivers or the best running backs and get an extra third round pick I don't see how this guy's overthinking this...

And even if all that were true which it isn't in my opinion you can't be scared to keep trying to give your team a better advantage and if moving down 3 to 5 spots does that then that's what you do I don't think we should be moving into the 20s somewhere between 15 and 18 will net us some damn good extra picks and still get one of the better players on the board...

And I still believe Guyton will workout as well maybe not as A for me your starting left tackle but if they have to move them to a starting right tackle what does that matter we're still getting a starting offensive lineman in that draft by moving down I mean what exactly were our options I don't even remember last year I still have PTSD so I don't remember the draft I don't remember how many spots we moved down and who we picked up to go with that trade but that doesn't mean you should be scared to keep trying that's the point here if it makes sense you moved down if not stay in Pat take your guy but definitely don't move up...

I'm still amazed here that people think that if you don't get a high first round pick you're not getting any starters the rest of the draft some are saying after the 2nd round I mean are you serious are you saying that the 1st round is the only guarantees of getting a great player an elite player it's just silly to me because I've seen more busts at the top of the first round than I have in the 3rd round...
