AIKEN, S.C. (Map, News) - A bank teller in Clearwater had a million reasons not to open an account for an Augusta, Ga., man Monday, authorities said. Alexander D. Smith, 31, was charged with disorderly conduct and two counts of forgery after he walked into the bank and tried to open an account by depositing a fake $1 million bill, said Aiken County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Michael Frank.
The employee refused to open the account and called police while the man started to curse at bank workers, Frank said.
The second forgery charge came after investigators learned Smith bought several cartons of cigarettes from a nearby grocery store with a stolen check, Frank said.
The federal government has never printed a million-dollar bill, Frank said

"The federal government has never printed a million-dollar bill, Frank said"

Glad this fact was freshly minted as to clear up any possible future misunderstandings.

10-12 years ago, I was working at a hotel much closer to my home, down in New Market, Virginia... this was before I had a computer, so I was a newspaper junkie; every morning when I got off work, I'd swing by the 7-11 at the bottom of the hill to buy a Washington Post, which was then 35 cents... I'd hand the pretty little cashier a dollar bill, and say "out of a million"...

She'd giggle, then one morning she asked me "has that ever worked"??

I said "well no, but it only has to work once, doesn't it"?? :D

So the following Christmas, my cousin gives me a few gag million dollar bills... naturally, the next morning, I hand one of them to that pretty little cashier when I buy my Post, and say "out of a million"...

Well, friends, I wasn't prepared for her reaction, I mean, they didn't look realistic at all... but she looked at that bill, looked at me kinda perplexed, looked at that bill again, hesitated for a second, then said "I'm gonna have to get the manager"...

And I'm about on the floor... never thought she'd take that joke bill serious, not for a second... LOL...

Now, it's trivia time-- do any of you know the two largest denomination bills made by our Treasury Department?? Here's a hint, they're only exchanged between banks, you'll never find either of them in general circulation...

I know one is a 10,000 bill. In one of my econ banking classes the professor told a story about a rich guy in NC who would give his wife a 10,000 bill every year for Christmas. What he didn't know was that the bank he requested from would have the same bill sent to him every year from the regional Federal Reserve office. So, essentially, he was literally giving his wife the same gift every year.

Right you are, the 10 grand note is the largest... they also make a 5 grand note...

Only reason I know that is my late Mom worked for a credit union for many years...

$100,000 series 1934 gold certificate, which featured a portrait of President Woodrow Wilson. A limited number were printed at the end of 1934, and they were intended for government use only.

:D

I didn't realize they had a 5,000 one. I'm guessing they also had a one grand note, too, at one point?

That's pretty funny though with her taking you at your word on the $1 million bill. You set her up, nicely.

Hey, that's COOL... never knew that... of course, the question was what is the largest denomination CURRENTLY being made...

But since I learned something, I forgive you... now, can you show us whose pics are on the 10k and 5k notes?? I don't know that, either...

Except I didn't know I was "setting her up"... didn't know they had gag million dollar bills... and like I said, the funny money really DID look "funny", not realistic at all...

And the girl wasn't even BLONDE... :D

I heard these were taken out of circulation because after 2-3 weeks in some fat guy's wallet, they started smelling like tuna fish.

Wow, this is the one guy on a federal note I've never heard of. From wikipedia:

wikipedia said:
The first U.S. federal currency was printed in 1862, during Chase's tenure as Secretary of the Treasury. Thus, it was his responsibility to design the notes. In an effort to further his political career, his own face appeared on a variety of U.S. paper currency. Most recently, in order to honor the man who introduced the modern system of banknotes, Chase was on the $10,000 bill, printed from 1928 to 1946.
