If he retires due to injury, how does that affect our cap?
Rivera signed a 5 year $20 million deal in 2005 with a $9 million signing bonus. He has played two seasons so the prorated cap hit from the signing bonus will be about $5.4 million if they release him before June 1st.
If they release him after June 1st ( which is more likely) then they can spread that cap hit over two season so the cap hit will only be $2.7 million over the next two seasons.
The NFL allows teams who know they are going to release players after June 1st to list two players early so the players have the opportunity to sign with another team during the free agency period.
Look for the Cowboys to list Rivera among the pre-june 1st cuts in a few weeks ( around the end of february).
The free agency period starts March 1st.
