I thought teams could go after SBs now? My understanding is that Dallas could ask for some of the bonus back. Am I wrong?

The team wouldn't if he is retiring due to injury - he could simply say "well, then I don't retire, cut me if you like" -- that would just be about letting the guy out on his own terms.

The need to ask for half the money back if you ask me, Rivera has been a total waste!

:banghead:

He got hurt -- it wasn't as if he didn't try hard -- plus he spent tons of time with the young guys helping them better understand the game.

If he retires due to injury, how does that affect our cap?

Rivera signed a 5 year $20 million deal in 2005 with a $9 million signing bonus. He has played two seasons so the prorated cap hit from the signing bonus will be about $5.4 million if they release him before June 1st.

If they release him after June 1st ( which is more likely) then they can spread that cap hit over two season so the cap hit will only be $2.7 million over the next two seasons.

The NFL allows teams who know they are going to release players after June 1st to list two players early so the players have the opportunity to sign with another team during the free agency period.

Look for the Cowboys to list Rivera among the pre-june 1st cuts in a few weeks ( around the end of february).

The free agency period starts March 1st.

Injury settlement, basically means he retires, we don't get a penny back. Book it.

Free agency often goes like that -- folks here who think we are getting money back don't pay much attention to the nfl.
