I'm watching the Kickoff Classic footage from last night. I just learned that Marcus Spears spent the summer learning martial arts from Randy White and said Randy taught him how to apply some of it in football.

Here's hoping.

That could be VERY helpful with his play. Of course it would happen in a contract year as well. lol

Yeah, it would be pretty grand to see him become a better pass rusher. 1st round pick expectations aside, he's a solid player, but he's never gotten after the QB too much, and you can never have enough guys applying pressure.

Anything and everything he can learn from Randy White is a good thing. I'm sure Randy showed him how he can apply these skills in the game of football

I watch Randy everytime he is on with Babe Laughenberg on CBS 11 in here in Dallas. He looks like he could still get out there and play.

If Spears is taking lessons from him, lord help the opposition!

I agree with you.

It would awesome, but Randy has more intensity (even today) in his pinkie than Spears has in his entire body.

Unless Spears has had a personality transplant, I expect more of the same.

That said, fingers are crossed that he can step it up even more.

Hostile, buddy, ive been posting that in posts here about spears and randy white. I am still hoping that when randy white visits camp, spears gets Igor O... to work with randy white some.

I love me some Martial Arts.
Best Martial Arts Move: A Kick to the nuts by David Buehler sends BRandon Jacobs and the ball through the giant endzone for a safety

If it was still legal, he needs to learn the head slap from Deacon Jones!

I thought Spears was solid last year so if he is improved my the extra work it would be welcomed. Maybe he can be a difference maker this year instead of a blocker-taker-upper for the most part....

I hope so as well. I'm looking forward to seeing an improved Spears playing opposite Olshansky. Igor looks freakin HUGE! That dude is massive and I can't wait to see him in a game.

Too bad for Seawright, if by some miracle he makes the team he WON'T be wearing #74.

I think Canty's play in New York would have more of an impact on Spears' contract than would Spears' play. In that aspect, I hope that Canty flops and Spears tears it up.

Yea, that is one big dude. I didn’t like losing Canty, but this guy may be an upgrade.

I know Spears isn't the most beloved player on this board but I am hoping we re-sign him before he hits free agency. A 3-4 DE is never going to put up monster numbers and I think he does what is asked of him. Getting him signed also means our starting D-Linemen (Ratliff & Olshansky) are locked up for the next few years.

I also wouldn't mind if Jones brought Hatcher and Spears into his office and told them only one of them is getting a new contract. I'd love to see those guys competing all season long.

Don't mean to dog the guy but I really can't believe he was a first rounder. Then again, Bobby Carpenter makes him look like a beast.

Really hoping Spears can finally get it all right and locked in and have a fantastic year.. but even then, I'd worry about him doing that since it was a contract year (we all know how that works).

I guess I'm just paranoid. He's a great 3-4 DE specifically against the run, but he's just a boring player. How many times do you remember Spears making an actual big play? I remember some of Canty's, not Spears.

I like that idea!

Spears forced a fumble on the Seahawks' first possession last Thanksgiving, after they had driven to our 35. We recovered, drove down the field and scored, starting our rout. The Seahawks kicked a field goal on their next possession, so if they had scored on that first one, it might have been a much different game.

Spears also forced the fumble on the first play of the game -- leading to our first touchdown -- when we beat the Eagles in 2007.

Canty averaged 1.1 more sacks per season than Spears, but Canty has never forced a fumble for a turnover. All in all, they were about even in the "big play" category when Canty was here.

Sounds great. I want to see the Spears I watched at LSU.
