Rod and Monte know the type of players they need for this scheme but Rod has said he needs to see it on the field. I like that it doesn't matter to them where a player was taken. After a few practices Monte said Patmon reminded him a lot of Barber and we kept him and cut Webb. Unlike their first draft, they will be working closely with the scouts to find those type of players. Of course once we pick the players I'm confident he will be able to get the most out of them.

Now that we have him under contract and we assume this will be a defensive draft, does anyone have any insight or stories in to Marinelli's ability to pick talent coming out of the draft? We have all read the stories about him telling the brain trust he could do without the 1st round pick previously which allowed us to go O-line and that played out so well for us, but with defense the obvious need for this draft I would like to know if he can help pick players well. Thanks.

He was the guy churning the defensive roster. If he wasn't here, guys like McClain wouldn't be here and we'd be making all sorts of excuses like we were when Kiffen and Rob were running the defense.

Marinelli's teams since 2006 and their drafts.

Marinelli coached Detroit from 2006-2008.

Chicago bears 2009-2012

Good post.

Keep in mind that some of the players drafting in the final year or two when he was with those teams might have fared better in Marinelli's defensive style than in the defenses that replaced his.

It's really the scouts who find the types of players that the coach wants. The coach has some role in evaluating those, but it's really the scouts who know the most about the players.
