Marinelli needed a right defensive end

Coming into this season it's clear that Marinelli needed two things a 3 tech DT and a right defensive end.

That isn't to suggest that we're likely done, but those were top priorities for fixing this defense.

We got Henry Melton, and we got a great deal in signing him.

In the draft the Cowboys had 3 targets who they felt could be a dynamic player at that right end position. I think that was Barr, Shazier, and Lawrence.

They had a first round grade on Lawrence for his pass rushing ability, which is all he is going to be doing for us at RDE. After really missing out on Barr, they felt they had to make a move to ensure they got this guy. A lot of people think the Cowboys spend too much, but they aren't really paying attention to what the Cowboys needs are.

Last year they needed to get a guard or center, they put themselves in position to get Frederick, who I don't think would have last much longer in the 2nd round given the run on linemen. They got him and Williams. According to worthless charts, many of you criticized the move, but what has always been more important than charts is getting players who fit your system and excel. How many draft picks are busts. There is no value in draft picks by themselves, nor do you need quantity over quality. We've seen that before.

If Lawrence is the player they think he is, he'll be worth the cost it took to make sure that we got him.

We're now about 50% done with revamping this line. Worst case scenario we start George Selvie/Anthony Spencer at the LDE. I wasn't pleased when they resigned Spencer before the draft, but that was obviously a signal that they didn't want to do too much, trying to get two rookie ends to start.

What we also learned in the draft is that they really don't covet the 1 tech.

Are we done with defensive line? I don't think so, but I wouldn't be surprised if in the 4th round we end up picking a WR or Safety.

Not it's time to go get that WILL and a 1 tech. Come on down Kevin Pierre-Louis and Justin Ellis. I would make some more trades to ensure we get those two guys.

Relax folks we got a RDE, well actually we traded up for a part time situational pass rusher.. That's awesome....o_O

The falcons would have taken him.
Now go out and wreak havoc.
Havoc- a situation in which there is much destruction

It looks like our plan is take shazier or drop down and take lawerence in the first round.

Then take the best available gaurd, OL in the second and keep the 3rd.

When Steelers took Shazier and we don't have a trade down partners, we are forced to take OL in the first - which screwed up our draft plan and cost us a 3rd to get DE in the second

I am hoping for another 3tech relief player and a i tech
the 1tech is available starting in the fifth round I have read.
the seventh round I expect some good to come out of it.

Agreed they were positions of need, but we need much more than that. We had Ware and Hatcher there last year and still sucked on defense. We need all the help we can get. Hopefully guys like Claiborne, Wilcox and Carter step up their game.

Melton is an upgrade from Hatcher, and Ware was injured the last two years, Lawrence doesn't have to do much to be an upgrade over 2012-2013 DeMarcus Ware...

Assuming that Spencer can play, we've already upgraded at RDE as well. Worst case scenario we will have Selvie starting again.

You also have the return of Ben Bass and Tyrone Crawford.

I'd like to upgrade the 1 tech, but in reality you can't compare last years defensive line to this one.

I said Shazier, I should have said Ford.

It's my understanding they didn't like Ford. They thought he was more a 3-4 OLB. That he couldn't get any bigger to play full time DE so would be a nickel player only.

I believe their top pass rushing DEs was overall: Clowney, Barr, Lawrence.

All this bull about VALUE and where they were taken is garbage.

Garbage created to have something to talk about in the media.

It has little baring on whether or not the guy is a player and wants to win every Sunday or not.

You guys need to stop playing the media game and focus on what happens each Sunday.

Value and worth are only realized in Championships.

Short of that..it's irrelevant.

I'm pleased we are finally looking for guys that are big, tough, and a little nasty.

We used to be that.

We will again.

60 minutes of leaving it on the field is what I want to see again from this team.

And it's not about Romo, Garrett or Jones.

It's about 53 guys who play as one.

Gimme gimme gimme.

I hope we get Ellis. Really hope the team doesn't stereotype the guy cause he's NT size, he plays with a burst. Dunno about the Will,

Thats great, but what down is not a passing down in the NFL, so the question is can he hold the edge

Part holding the edge......part getting up field on the way to the QB and turning it back up for Lee/Carter/Safety which is what Marinelli wants.......part re-acting better to the read option, /the McCoy lead draws, the inside San Diego handoffs that gutted us..... with quik-tich'e reaction time.

Looking back at the third round, there actually weren't any players taken that I think we "had to have."

My only beef is that we traded and gave the Commanders extra picks. But at least we know they won't do anything of note with them.

No, he will get moved out of the way often, but occasionally he will beat the blocks, get inside quickly, and make a stop in the backfield, hopefully....

We got a guy we liked in the 1st for a 2 and a 3. So we came out of the first three rounds with two guys with first round grades.

That is far better than having a 1, 2, and 3 graded guys IMO. If our board is similar to last year this means he was maybe one of 20 guys with a first round grade.

This is classic draft to your board strategy.

For many teams now, most of their defensive linemen are considered part-time players.

There were only 4 defensive ends who totaled over 1,000 snaps last season.

And offensive tackle?

36.

That's right. They had Clowney, Barr and then Lawrence.

I actually prefer Lawrence as a true down weakside DE in a 4-3 than Barr.
