It will be a negligible impact unless there is a serious commitment to improving the defensive talent AND we nail it in our effort.

But I seriously doubt this brain trust is smart enough to look at the problem, diagnose it and fix it appropriately.

A source tells me that Jerry just wants to keep Kiffin around in case Garrett is fired during the season. He'll have the Cowboys coached by committee: Kiffin, Callahan, Marinelli, and himself.

Sounds to me like they wanted to elevate Marinelli but had to appease his loyalty to the old man. So they create some nonsense position like assistant head coach/defense.

that's exactly what happened but it certainly seems to be the best solution to an ugly problem.

I've asked this question for four months now. Since obviously you disagree, tell me why he is a good one. I keep hearing where our DL was horrible, and that we had 46 different defensive linemen. So answer a couple of questions for me please. If he did such a good job coaching the DL, why were they horrible? If they were all new players, fresh off the street, how and when did he have a chance to coach them? Statistically we couldn't have been any worse, so what did he do to make it better? Will someone please enlighten me?

The defensive line was horrible because it was riddled with players in rotation and even starters who were not NFL-caliber players.

Still, for street free agents and CFL players, he did a very good job getting the most out of them, even if it wasn't enough down the stretch. For a while, they played well enough to win some games in the first half of the season.

Lastly, defense is a unit. It is not just DL. Or just LBs. Or Just DBs.

not sure how anyone can complain about kiffin getting demoted and being paid this year to nap.
marinelli has actually coordinated successful defenses this decade much less century.

the offensive stuff has been weird since day 1.
jerry has basically slapped Garrett's hand a few times.
he is clearly saying you aren't doing a good enough job when he removes his play calling duties.
jason didnt want the guy jerry chose calling plays and jerry doesnt want jason calling plays so linehan becomes a compromise.

no idea why callahan gets retained except to maintain jerry's foot on garrett's neck.

this is very strange indeed.
some jimmy johnson cutthroat weirdo stuff.
and if it doesnt produce results there will no doubt be a complete reboot for a new everything in 2015.

I read it would be Callahan as interim if need be.

I can't understand why Jerry didn't let Callahan walk away to the Browns. He wouldn't have to pay out his contract. So this makes as much sense as anything.

what is critical is moving off 8-8 one way or the other.

4-12 would be a truly heinous season to watch but the following off-season would be a complete overhaul not merely bandaids on open sores.

I think if there's one thing literally everyone can agree on, that's it. Kiffin shouldn't be the DC. People who are railing about the big, bad complainers just assume the complaint is about the move on the surface. Complaints by and large aren't about the move itself. It's about the dysfunction of the front office, plain and simple.

You can call it embarrassing all you want but it was likely the only way to get Marinelli to Dallas. This move to change roles and titles after one year was probably talked about before either of them came to Dallas. There is no way Marinelli is the current DC in Dallas if Jerry doesn't first hire Kiffin.

Who cares about Rod Marinelli? Since when is he some defensive savior? I'd rather have fat Rob and the 3-4 back.

I have to admit this is the first time I have ever heard of a negotiating ploy to keep a DL coach's friend employed just so they are kept happy.

I guess I need to see how this has been done over and over again by successful franchises. Heck, probably everyone does it.

I thought it was a weird hire, too. But I can also see it having been a transition plan all along. I like what the Bears do a lot more than what Ryan did, so I don't mind the scheme change, but Kiffin was old and had been out of the league. Marinelli was the better choice call along.
