I touched on this in another thread, but I think this topic deserves it own thread. Marinelli is viewed as a miracle worker of sorts regarding the defense. He has been forced to hold his defense of mighty orphans together with duct tape and baling wire up to this point.

Over the past couple of years draft capital has been spent on his side of the ball. Byron Jones (1st), Jaylon Smith (2nd), Tapper (Early 4th), Lawrence (2nd and a 3rd), Gregory (2nd), Collins (Early 3rd), and now this year we have Taco (1st), Cheeto (2nd) Lewis (3rd) Woods and Ivey. Gregory isn't his fault. We also have some emerging talent in guys like Brown and Heath.

Does Marinelli have enough assets on his side of the ball so that he doesn't get a fee pass this year? I personally am concerned that the game has passed him by and that his earlier success is based in large part on the great players he had.

I think at a minimum we should see marked improvement in certain aspects of the defense. It should be a top 15 defense unless the entire defense is decimated by injuries. The offense will protect this defense in most games. If he can't cobble a top 15 defense out of this group with the protection this offense affords it I would cut him loose.

I think you should also start to see glimpses of a very dominant defense at times. It is possible that this defense could have a hole or two which remain to be filled. But every team is going to have that. He shouldn't require a hall of famer at every position to be successful.

We were 14th in yards and 5th in points given up last year. We are already a top 15 defense. I expect that to improved to a top 12.
However the pass D needs to most improvement. It improved last year and even with all the changes this year, I think it will be better.

We can finish 12th overall, but be playing like a top 10 by the end of the season.

Yep. No more passes after this year. Smith and Tapper owe him a stout performance....the defense needs to take a step ahead this yr. I give them the first 8 games...everything considered...after that..its on Rod....give or take injuries...etc etc.

The reason why our D stats look good is because they were never on the field...Our offense hogged the ball. Please stop trying to change history..and making this defense/coach more than they are.

Of the first 6 guys that you mention that Marinelli has been given, three didn't play last year (Smith, Tapper, Gregory), and one of them had back surgery (and was suspended 4 games) and clearly wasn't the same player he was before. Only B Jones and Collins contributed much at all (and Collins missed all of his rookie training camp recovering from a broken foot).

It isn't logical to say he had that list of guys and ding him for not producing with them.

The others will be rookies even though I do have some high hopes for many of them.

I guess what I'm saying is that I do agree that Marinelli needs to get this group to a better place than they were last year... but I think his hands were tied more than you're saying they were in previous seasons.

He indeed was trying to make chicken salad out of chicken ****.

That is a dumb statement...trying to rewrite history...and I am not making them something more than they are, as you are making them something less than they are.
AND....isn't that what you want from an offense, ball control, keep the other D out there to wear them down. I mean you want the offense to go out and not hog the ball....look at Philly and the offensive guru (supposedly) in Chip Kelly, how did that work for them?

So if my D is a top 10 and my O is #1, and we finish 13-3...but no, wait, our d didn't deserve it because our O was too dominant....o_O...guess this isn't a team sport then?

Oh......back at ya!

Marinelli does depend upon his linebackers...and the addition of Smith with Lee can not be overstated in glue between the line and secondary.

How you could miss out on the man.....the myth.....the legend.....of Jordan Carrell is beyond me.

My point is that all should be available this year except Gregory. If you believe they are talented players at some point the burden shifts to Rod to show he can get it done here.

Gotcha Bro.

I agree that as Dallas really shifts the player development program to the defensive side of the ball and the talent begins to roll in on defense, Marinelli will surely have to improve the product over there.

I think he will.

His style of football is so fundamentally sound and relies so much on playing smart and playing hard, I would be surprised if defense didn't continue to improve. There will be bumps as rookies play more and more, but overall I think he will get the job done.

Like Parcells said they say in Texas: "We're fixin' to find out."

IN 1 1/2 yrs at the helm his has taken this defense from dead last in points allowed to 5th. And 31st overall def to 13th. With almost the same DEF KIffin had. The game has not passed Marinelli by. Maybe you just dont what ur seeing? Do they have the players TB had no. THis team reminds me SEA. When Carroll first got there they cleaned house and went with young guys. Those guys turned into Sherman, Avril, Meybane, Chancellor, Bennett, Wilson...ect. But SEA went thru what the Cowboys are going thru finding their guys to fit the right parts. This defense is 1 1/2 yrs in the making. Marinelli has overhauled this defense without never having to clean house until the peices he wanted are there. This is what Dallas did with the OL. Nobody like the Frederick pick, people were mad that Martin was the last man standing. Fans and their medical knowledge knew Leary would never be able to play with his knee. This team builds with their guys, has gotten their guys. Fans just always know better then the team.
