I touched on this in another thread, but I think this topic deserves it own thread. Marinelli is viewed as a miracle worker of sorts regarding the defense. He has been forced to hold his defense of mighty orphans together with duct tape and baling wire up to this point.
Over the past couple of years draft capital has been spent on his side of the ball. Byron Jones (1st), Jaylon Smith (2nd), Tapper (Early 4th), Lawrence (2nd and a 3rd), Gregory (2nd), Collins (Early 3rd), and now this year we have Taco (1st), Cheeto (2nd) Lewis (3rd) Woods and Ivey. Gregory isn't his fault. We also have some emerging talent in guys like Brown and Heath.
Does Marinelli have enough assets on his side of the ball so that he doesn't get a fee pass this year? I personally am concerned that the game has passed him by and that his earlier success is based in large part on the great players he had.
I think at a minimum we should see marked improvement in certain aspects of the defense. It should be a top 15 defense unless the entire defense is decimated by injuries. The offense will protect this defense in most games. If he can't cobble a top 15 defense out of this group with the protection this offense affords it I would cut him loose.
I think you should also start to see glimpses of a very dominant defense at times. It is possible that this defense could have a hole or two which remain to be filled. But every team is going to have that. He shouldn't require a hall of famer at every position to be successful.
