Of the first 6 guys that you mention that Marinelli has been given, three didn't play last year (Smith, Tapper, Gregory), and one of them had back surgery (and was suspended 4 games) and clearly wasn't the same player he was before. Only B Jones and Collins contributed much at all (and Collins missed all of his rookie training camp recovering from a broken foot).

It isn't logical to say he had that list of guys and ding him for not producing with them.

The others will be rookies even though I do have some high hopes for many of them.

I guess what I'm saying is that I do agree that Marinelli needs to get this group to a better place than they were last year... but I think his hands were tied more than you're saying they were in previous seasons.

He indeed was trying to make chicken salad out of chicken ****.
Well said.

I don't think he has the players he wants quite yet. Remember, Jaylon is still a rookie and we are looking at starting and/or giving significant playing time to 3 rookies in the secondary. Heath may be better than Church, but it's not like he's Ronnie Lott back there (or even George Teague). Irving is looking at suspension, Lawrence's health is in doubt and we will probably have T. Crawford playing DE which isn't his position.

The biggest thing I'm looking for is progress. I'm looking for 2 of the rookies in the secondary to look like legitimate starters this season and for Heath to be better than Church (afterall, we got rid of Church to make Heath the starter). I also want to see Charlton look like a legit starter this season as well since it was Marinelli's choice.

Just understanding the situation. It's not all doom and gloom. I don't see why we can't be better on defense this year. But, becoming a top tier defense is a different story.

Copy that!
After reading the o.p. it was kinda a no- brainer in my opinion ,,,of course it's going to be a better defense with him at the helm and these new toys jerry handed him.

How many 1st rounders and just all around great players are on that offense? Dez, Martin, Frederick, Tyron Smith, Lael Collins was projected to be a 1st rounder, hall of fame tight end Jason Witten. On the other hand, Marinelli gets players off of the junk heap from other teams or a player with some sort of issues in the draft who either keep getting suspended or are forever injured. Rolondo McClain couldn't play because he got suspended. Demarcus Lawrence was suspended for some games and didn't do much when he went in. Jaylon Smith couldn't play last year. Charles Tapper couldn't play due to injury. Randy Gregory was out for like the past 2 years. Morris Claiborne was perenially injured. A lot of people couldn't wait for the secondary to walk. Tyrone Crawford didn't do much. I'm not seeing this huge surge of talent that we have on defense and given what we had, the defense played well above par.

Can't blame the chef if he doesn't have the right groceries. You expect fois gras but was given chick livers.
Exactly my words to Coach Garrett haters. So many fans expect a new, never been, assigned HC to win it all right away. Unless a SB team was given to him (Schwitzer, Chucky & Tomlin) it's going to take at least a good decade just to get the scouts/players etc...if that. What's even tougher is having a hands on, doesn't mind his own business OWNER in your shadows 24-7. That alone is something NO other Dallas Cowboys coach has put up with over 10yrs let alone playing for Jones for another 8yrs. Mercy, that's almost 20yrs dealing with Jones. I like to see how long some of the Garrett haters would of lasted being in Garrett's shoes.

And thus, my point has been proven by Garrett becoming NFL's 2016 Coach Of The Year. Last time that happened was in the Jimmy Johnson tenure. And we all seen what Jimmy did with that team.

Please. Garrett has had more than enough years to show he's a good coach, and last year's team was the 6th highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL. NFL coach of the year means nothing if you can't coach, or manage a game in the playoffs. He's proved he's not capable le of big boy coaching several times.

What??? Here are the highest scoring Cowboys teams (not NFL teams) from the Garrett thread. Notice 2016 ranks at #10.
