Took this info out of an article I posted about an hour ago (Article: Another day in Paradise for Romo) which was written JJT of the DMN. Included in JJT's article was info that Marino voted to pro bowl in his rookie year after 9 starts (not sure he meant 9 starts for whole season or what) but anyway JJT compared Marino's stats after 9 games against Romo's stats after 8 games. I've pulled this info from JJT's article so you all could see the comparison cause I didn't want this info to get lost considering some on this board, and many fans of other teams, don't believe Romo deserves this vote etc. Note similarity in their numbers but Romo's are better but then Romo did sit on the bench for 3 years so he's not really a rookie but then Marino was a first round pick while Romo undrafted. Anyway here are the numbers provided in JJT's column in today's DMN.

CATEGORY Marino Romo
Starts 9 8
Completions 173 183
Attempts 296 276
Percentage 58.4 66.3
Yards 2210 2440
Avg per Comp 12.77 13.3
Avg per Att 7.47 8.84
TDs 20 16
INTs 6 10
Rating 96.0 98.4

BTW: In my mind this shoots down the arguement that media hyped Romo, 8 games isn't enough to prove anything, etc. Not saying Romo is Marino but then in his rookie season Marino wasn't Marino either. Point is selecting a young QB in his first playing season to the pro bowl after playing around half a season has been done before many years ago and that player sure went on to prove just how good he was. I wouldn't mind if Romo put up similar numbers so long as Romo's numbers included several SB rings for our Cowboys. Hope you enjoy.

How about Staubach in 71. He didnt becoem the #1 QB until game 8 that year in a 14 game schedule and made the pro bowl.

great job.

So I looked it up too and Marino was in a total of 11... 9 STARTS like you wrote... Romo was in 1/2 game more than his 9... I wonder how much of Marino stats are from the non-start 2 games... Very close stats indeed

I sure hope Romo plays to the level either Marino or Roger did.

Minus the Marino no rings.

Yeah- no rings is the big thing missing from Marino's career. Not that it was his fault- Shula was over the hill and so was Jimmy. Neither one of them ever got around to giving him a real D and a real running game.

Ok while I would agree that the ring is the big thing missing from Marino's resume and it would have been nice if he had gotten one but... "Not that it was his fault"???

So now... when a GREAT QB doenst win a ring... "its wasnt his fault" "he didnt have a running game" "he played on a bad team" "his coach was old"

Come on now... he WAS playing QB right?

Fiveandcounting: Wow didn't know that about Staubach. His being voted to the pro bowl in 71 along with Marino's many years later certainly indicates to all those opposing Romo's selection only cause he started in only 8 games need to reevaluate their ideas. On other hand as a Cowboy fan, gotta admit that Romo is sure in real good company. We can only hope he plays anywhere near the level of those 2 great HOF QBs. Wonder what those TV pundits on the sports shows would say when info re Staubach & Marino going to pro bowl with similarly few starts would have to say. If they don't believe Romo should go cause he started so few games, then they better be prepared say same thing about Staubach and Marino.

A lot of things can factor into a great QB not winning a ring. A porous defense. Lack of a running game. Lack of an O-line.

Look at Peyton Manning. Arguably the best QB in the last half decade or more, and has never had a team that has had the right stuff.

But I do see where you are coming from.

Mr. Fletch... your points are all well and good... in more recent History as you bring up Manning... he has outright choked. He cant play a REAL PHYSICAL game and neither can his Receivers... even the game against us this year.

Being great in regular season and NOT being great in Post season doesnt buy you a pass on the WHOLE.

Bottom line with Marino: He was great during the year and didnt close the deal in postseason.

This one blows me away. He has had better teams that the one he has had this year and this year their run defense is swiss. His Window along with McNabbs are pretty much shut IMO.

Fouts played in only 10 games in 1983 and made that pro-bowl along with Marino. Just like this year in the NFC, the AFC QBs were weak that season or relegated to part time because of youth or injury. The NFC QBs dominated the league leading stats that year.

Great info on Marino, and also Fouts. There are plenty more examples too. Assuming Romo plays in the last 2 games:

1982 Fouts (9 games) 93.3
1983 Fouts (10 games) 92.5
1983 Marino (11 games) 96.0
2002 McNabb (10 games) 86.0
2006 Romo (11 games) 98.4

I was a fan of Marino even if not of the Fins. This BS about blaming the QB when the team does not have a real good D, or a decent running game, etc is just plain pathetic. "did not close the deal in postseason" that is a joke. Does a QB play D? NO. The Fins had only one 1000 yd rusher in like 7-8 years. Show me a pure passing team that won a SB.

Let me get this straight.

When a team loses the SB - the defense is at fault, along with no running game.

How about a QB that makes poor decisions? Not a factor? Eh... just give him a pass because during the year he had great numbers and for some unknown reason the defense and running game was enough to get them to playoffs/superbowl. Ok?

You know how it is... QB gets all the glory... or... all the blame.... as more and more time goes by... I suppose you can blame Marino and not winning a SB on the eroding shorelines along the eastern coast of florida?

Putting SuperBowl wins or losses solely on the back of QB's is ludicrous. You can't say that a team won or lost the SB simply on the play of the QB. Look at Aikman. 3 SuperBowl wins and nobody here would say that he is solely responsible for those wins. What about Emmitt, Irvin, our great O-lines and defenses? The media and non-Cowboy fans will argue that Aikman only earned the rings & HOF because of his supporting cast and without them he would be average. I hear it all the time.

Now lets look at Marino's and Miami's performance at the lone SB he played in.

Marino: 29-50, 318 yds, 1 TD, 2 Ints.....Not a stellar performance but certainly not something that's going to cause them to lose the game on HIS efforts alone. FYI: There were 0 Int return yards and the 49ers also gave up two fumbles to Miami so the turnover ratio was even.

Miami rushing: 25 yards.........25!! And 2.8 yds/att. Talk about not having a running game

Miami defense: 537 yds allowed, 38 points, 5 TD's Real hard for anyone to win a game when your defense plays like that (See Romo in this year's Saints game)

And how about Elway....3 SB losses before the two he won, same draft class as Marino:

Elway:

22-37, 304 yds, 1 TD, 1 Int
14-38, 257 yds, 1 TD, 3 Int - horrible performance but still not enough to lose the game on his own when you look at the rest of the stats
10-26, 108 yds, 0 TD, 2 Int - sacked 6 times

Denver rushing:

Elway led the team in rushing with 27 yds and 1 TD - pathetic running game
2nd in rushing with 32 yards, leading rusher had 38, 0 TD's
Humphrey had 61 yards with a long of 34, 0 TD's....Elway 2nd with 8 yds and 1 TD

Denver Defense:

399 yds allowed, 39 points and 5 TD's
602 yds allowed, 42 points and 6 TD's
461 yds allowed, 55 points and 8 TD's

With help like that you can have a perfect QB rating, 300+ yards passing, 4 TD's and 0 Int's and STILL theoretically lose a SuperBowl.

So this "having no defense" forced 2 turnovers......hmmm....

The Dolphins set a Super Bowl record for least rush attempts in a game (9).
They didnt even try. Thats the problem. They abandoned the run. Sometimes you need to run even if you dont see results right away.

In the second period, the 49ers began to take control of the game. Safety Dwight Hicks broke up two consecutive Marino passes, and the Dolphins were forced to punt from their own 10-yard line.
They werent using the running game. 2.8 ypc x 2 instead of 2 inc passes leaves you with 3 and about 5ish. hmmm...

With about two minutes left in the half, the Dolphins finally managed to get a good drive going on their next possession. Marino completed 7 out of 9 passes, the last one being a 30-yard pass to tight end Joe Rose, to reach the 49ers 12-yard line.
Again... no rushing attempts. They saw Marino as one dimension and he didnt help his cause.

I guess we have a Marino hater here. Blaming Marino for not running the ball; blaming Marino for the D giving up 537 yds and 38 pts. Pretty sad

Not a Marino or a Favre hater. They are amazing to watch.... but it is well known that both teams/coaches put it on the QB's... they let the QB's deviate away from running game, QB's have more say than the coaches in those two cases... etc...

Those two were more about passing... than TEAM. Talk about TO... hmmph!
