after 1 year he has done more than i expected out of a 3rd round draft pick. JJ doesnt have the starting spot on lock, dont get me wrong JJ is a more talented athlete and has been the starter, but barber is solid - he hits the hole hard, has nice vision especially for a young back, he is pretty quick. both of them have issues with breaking tackles, JJ is a tough runner but neither really break tackles. expect jones to be challenged but win it out. Barber will see his share of carries . . .

I have had many thoughts about current state of affairs at running back myself. And Marion Barber the 3rd may very well be THE ANSWER, whether Julius Jones stays healthy or not. Let's not forget that this young man fell to the 3rd round after projecting to as high as a mid 1st rounder last year. He is very talented and looked great last season as a rookie.

I still believe that Julius Jones is a great talent, and very well could be a 1400+ yard type of back. But the question is will we ever see him stay healthy for an entire 16 game season, in addition to a potential of 3 or 4 playoff games....or CAN he stay healthy for that matter?

I've compared the two and both have great attributes. From what I've seen Julius Jones is the more explosive, but Barber seems to be the better blocker and pass catcher, might be better off tackle as well, which I think are two important factors to consider since Bledsoe is the signal caller. He's not the most 'mobile' players, so being able to either pitch it off to the side quick or find a RB in the flat will be crucial to this offense's success.

This should definitely be an interesting camp, because at this point I'm not sure that Julius is an automatic lock for the #1 RB position. I'm sure both will see their fare share of carries this season no matter who is dubbed 'the starter.

:hammer:

i agree, i think MBIII is going to be the 3rd down back as parcells has even said that he has become a very, very, very good blocker and has surpassed jones in the receiving aspect of the RB, this is perfect for a 3rd down RB. and if Jones does go down MBIII is perfectly capable of stepping in and playing a fulltime role for a short amount of time, now we dont know if MBIII could go all 16 games with 25+ carries but we do know that he can step in for jones on 3rd down, in rotation and in case of injury and he is a solid back to do so.

Whether 3rd, 4th, or 7th....he is an exceptional talent. Over the years great backs have been found in the later rounds anyway. Myself I'm not too high on using 1st rounders on RB's since their shelf life is considerably less than most other positions.

emmitt smith was a first rounder . . . :D. im an arse! i get what your saying, but you can also say the same for most any position, first rounders have the biggest chance of being "busts" because 1st rounders are supposed to be great and they arent always, 2nd and 3rd rounders not so much but they are expected to be good and if your drafted from 4-7 (later for some players, staubach 12th) you arent expected to do anything when you do its an amazing feat. 1st rounders just have more pressure to succeed and talent is all over the draft.

but yes RBs are prime in the 2nd and third i think, i had high hopes for JJ arrington, he was the steal of the draft, IMO. and he could still make it somewhere. JJ is a 2nd rounder and the list goes on . . .

Certainly, Marion gives us the power RB that Thomas wasnt able to be here.

I don't think it is accurate to classify Barber as a power runner.

He has more power than Jones, for sure, but Barber on the whole is simply a more complete back than Jones.

Jones adds a breakaway dimension but I'd like to see their carries shared a little more evenly this year. In a tough game where the holes aren't there I definitely want to see more Barber.

Jones seems like he needs the holes and he needs to get into a flow or he's not as effective.

Barber might be a little better blocker, and a little better receiver, but overall JJ has more talent and is much more dangerous. The defense will fear JJ; they will never fear MB.

They might fear MB3 as a punishing runner. He was really dishing it out on Seattle's tacklers last season.
I love how the guy finishes off runs. He seems to explode into tacklers.

I agree with you on Barber. This guy has the potential to be great given the right circumstances. I would like to see him on the field more. Look at what happened to KC when they underestimated the rookie.

Jones has proven that he can tote the rock 30+ times a game and come back the next week and do it again and still be successful. I know Big Bill is a football Guru, but I wish he'd forget about Jones size and just give him the ball. Jones is more than capable of being an EVERY down back.

I don't have anything against III, but I only want to see him 5 or 6 times a game.
