No, Barber was not orginally a bust at all. In fact he was a GREAT pick for a 4th rounder.

Maybe after he got the big contract, I'm not sure.

Yahoo Contributor Network is essentially the same concept as Bleacher Report -- articles written by "users like you." Not exactly the pinnacle of journalistic integrity.

The author of this particular article is a college student at UNLV.

No, average life span of a RB is 3 years and he was a 4th round pick. Bust no, overpaid yes.

That giant contract Jerry gave him was a bust for sure.

So, this should be Murray's last year?

Everyone is a bust unless you have both these things: Super Bowl Win and Hall of Fame in induction.

Apparently the "contributor" has never heard of Tony Dixon, Jacob Rogers, Marcus Spears, Felix Jones, Dwayne Goodrich, Al Johnson, Kevin Burnett, James Marten, Ebenezer Ekuban, Solomon Page, or Martellus Bennett. All of whom I would consider bigger disappointments than Marion Barber in the time frame the writer is talking about.

In fact, I would argue that getting a pro bowl running back in the 4th round makes Barber one of the best picks of the last decade.

Life span arguments usually don't hold up because the numbers are being skewed by guys that can't play in the first place but had a cup of coffee in the league and are counted anyway. The 30 year old plateau holds up better for rbs with some obvious exceptions.

In no way was Barber a bust.

Barber had the reckless running style that will shorten the career of any RB. But the short career should not take away from what Barber did in any type of short yardage situation for us.

If a bust gets you 29 rushing TDs in their first 3 seasons, then please give me another bust.

Just look at that goaline run he had that went from a sure safety back to the line of scrimmage. No NFL bust can claim a play like that, not a bust at all.

If you only count the guys who were good enough to become starters at one point then you are talking about 5-8 years in the league. Not many guys play for a very long time and they are exceptions to the rule. That's what made Emmitt such an oddity in his longevity.

Just think about Felix's class - still some good players going strong. Most notably Ray Rice, Jamaal Charles and Matt Forte were quality starters and still going strong. You can say that a number of those players careers are now in limbo (Mendenhall, Stewart, Choice...)

Yeah, the draft pick was good. The contract was bad.

Marion Barber was an EXCELLENT draft pick
Marion Barber was a GOD AWFUL contract extension

Barber's contract extension was seriously the worst signing Jerry has made in the last 10 years except for the Roy Williams debacle.

You can't really be a bust from a 4th round position in the draft. Being a 'bust' requires a disastrous fall from high expectations. If you have that high an expectation for a 4th round pick, it's your estimation that is the problem.

Unless, of course, as alluded to above, not being a bust means,
"you have both these things: Super Bowl Win and Hall of Fame in induction."

Danny Coale will be the next giant bust, I guess.
