Marion Barber Will Re-Sign By The Superbowl?

Yesterday my buddy called me and said he was watching NFL Live on ESPN and they did a segment with Ed Werder to catch them up on Cowboys news. He said the one thing that Werder said was that Marion Barber WOULD be signing a contract extension this week or next week so that the team would have him locked up before superbowl weekend. I didn't get a chance to watch the show so I was wondering if anyone else seen it or if I'm just being bs'd by this guy?

Marion would be better served to wait till AFTER the Super Bowl to sign. As Super Bowl XLII MVP, Barber will get a whole lot more money;)

i don't see him signing before the super bowl. they may come to an agreement but there is no money to sign him. it would take some very creative work to make a contract work with the money we have left. i'm not sure exactly how much is left but it could'nt be much over a million if that much

We're still in the League Year 2007. New league year begins in March. And I don't know that any true salary cap dollars will be available until AFTER the superbowl.
This was from AdamJT13 in the Daily Zone sticky thread ..

It is after the season. After the last regular-season game, you can't change anything for 2007. Players get only the playoff pay now (the set amount for winning or losing each game), and that doesn't count against the cap.

Any contracts done now would be for 2008 and beyond and would affect only those years' caps.

I sure hope it's true. Otherwise I just wasted my money on that new authentic #24 jersey........

Jerry and us fans have suffered for over a decade. If he is not smart enough to keep the "impact" pieces then.... we are in trouble.

I kinda thing what I posted still holds true. We're still in LY2007 with less than $400k. Any contracts done will be with LY2008 in mind, but the 'boys salary cap isn't adjusted for that right now. So, I can't see how they could do a significant contract like Barber's just yet.

One thing I might've been wrong for sure on is the need to wait until LY2008 begins to do the contract. Just depends on when they announce everyone's cap numbers.

I honestly have no idea which line of thinking is correct. I mean I can see Adam's logic since the season is over for many teams but I can also see a situation where a playoff team could lose a player to injury like a kicker for example and be forced to sign one temporarily for the playoffs. Since that contract most likely would only be for the playoffs, it would seem it would apply toward the current (2007) season.

I guess technically, any existing player receiving a new contract would be an extension so it would apply to next season's (2008) cap, but any player signed who was not already under a contract with this team would have to fit within this year's cap.

That being said, what if a team was out of cap space and needed a kicker? If they cut a player would it free up any cap room now that the season is over? Based on that logic, it would seem Adam's post makes more sense.

I'm actually not disputing what Adam is saying. The primary point is that I just don't there is enough funds in the salary cap to do a contract for Barber. At least not until they adjust the salary cap for 2008. Doesn't mean they couldn't pick up another player if they absolutely had to, but I think it'd be a stretch.

That's a very good point ..
