"Martyball" and the passage of time

I noticed a lot of my fellow Zoners gleefully talking about how many of our problems will be solved because we have "Martyball" now. As someone who was around during "Martyball"it's interesting because back then Marty came to be known as basically a simpleton who was famous for soul crushing losses and who couldn't get over the top, e.g., he's the only coach in NFL history with 200 wins but a losing playoff record (and his playoff record STUNK). He was also on the losing end of iconic playoff losses, e.g., "The Drive", "The Fumble."
I'm curious what it is about Martyball that has people excited? Let me know Zoners.

Yes. I've also heard him called the best regular season coach ever!! To have his spawn coaching our team, it's a match made in heaven.

It's pretty much the complete opposite of Air Coryell. It's pretty much running the ball. Even the passing game is with running the ball in mind.

I remember "Martyball" very well, and living in SW Missouri since 1994, I've heard many Chiefs fan bemoan that chapter of their history. However..... Jethro isn't paying Dak all that money to hand the ball off 30 times a game. I'm willing to bet the Cowboys will still pass more than they run, unless Dak gets injured again.

Marty was a great coach. You've been brainwashed into thinking the so called post season is some greater validation. Its not. Its as illegitimate as the preseason

Even the generic Golden State Warriors acknowledge their past that doesn't involve winning championships. They acknowledge Don Nelson and Nelson didn't nowhere near as much as Marty Ball...

He is not likely to succeed….and that has little to do with his ability. No he didn’t achieve greatness as an OC, but could be a leader of men…just isn’t gonna be here.

He doesn’t have the horses and this FO has no idea how to provide them. Be honest, it’s about having the players.

Good for him personally. He will earn a HC salary, albeit likely at the lowest in the league (has that even been made public yet?) while literally no other team was after him.

His hire was about Jerry thinking there was no way MM would give him the middle finger and not wanting the QB hill he is going to die on to have to learn a new offense.

In 21 seasons Marty finished below ,500 twice. Fwiw, he knew how to build a competitive team, he just couldn't get them over the hump.

We've seen the same thing with Jason and McCarthy.

Brian seems to have a little more Parcels judging by the draft. He appears to want blue collar players willing who work more and talk less.

You never heard of Hank Stram and Len Dawson? They lost to GB in the second SB.
And came back a couple years later to beat Minnesota for their first SB win.

I'll say it the way someone said it to me when Garrett was named the HC and I just had a bad feeling about it.

Nostalgia.

But really, I don't expect Brian to be all that much like his dad, other than emphasizing and prioritizing the run game

Just my honest take on Marty Schottenheimer:

He was an EXCELLENT Head Coach. I remember his Chargers teams being extremely tough to beat week in week out.

But he had the same "black cat" luck of Tony Romo. It just wasn't meant to be. And he was partly responsible.

He teams did seem to crawl into a shell in the post-season and their regular season bravado evaporated.

Now I ask you. What's different about Martyball then what we've witnessed here? Not much. We're missing that gear. We get tight.

Just like Marty's teams did. It's too cozy in Dallas. I'm not sure B- Schotty can change that.

But maybe he's learned from witnessing travesty/disaster the pitfalls of comfort both in his Father's teams and here in Dallas.

I think he's got a chip on his shoulder. He's guaranteed to the fans a lot of W'S are coming. That's not anything his Father ever neared doing. Despite imho- being a great football coach.

Some coaches are about details. Like Parcells. If you were a good player he left you alone. You obviously understood the details.

Guys like Romo who were almost good. Just needed a Parcells to squeeze out the very best in him.

To me, it just kinda sucked Parcells got in, basically did some consulting and got gone. My biggest gripe about Shottenheimer is the one-the-job training. I just hope he doesn't make us miss Mike McCarthy.
