Matt Johnson Injured At Camp

Well, I always root for any young man to live out his dream of playing in the NFL (preferably with the Cowboys), but I think it is time for Mr. Johnson, and the Cowboys organization, to come to the realization that playing football in the NFL (at least for the Cowboys) is not in his cards. This is beyond bad luck, this has reached ominous, paranormal heights...this is crazy!

This guy reminds me of Mike Sherrard..

..a former #1 draft pick who broke his leg first then tried to come back..

.. and he got hurt again with an even more serious injury..

which ended his career after about 3 years..

Matt Johnson needs to read about him and make a good decision for himself.

Sherrard broke his leg twice, but he went on to have more than 3 years. Never got back the explosiveness he had but had a decent career (49ers, Giants, ended with Broncos) 86-96

Jimmy Smith broke his leg and then had an emergency apendectomy with complications and had a HOF type career with Jax.

We need a rangy safety who can make plays. You really need that in this defense although even when I say this defense I don't know for sure what the heck they will run. It'll likely depend on the personnel like most defenses.

jobberone, I see this defense as a single over-the-top, regularly, just as the package is the usual on-the-field group. I figure that the center fielder will shade to a side quite a bit...but that being the primary projection. I don't think that single covereage will change this much.

Of course, with a team that features a tight end, pack, or slot receiver up field in the slot, there will be more double covereages to take care of this threat...I'm still thinking that the top will either be a top coverage safety, such as Wilcox, or even a more in box person as would be represented in a Smith. Depending on strengths of the opponent for that week.

That's a basic coverage but teams play multiple coverages because offenses know how to attack certain looks. So they get disguised right up to the snap which is why Tony waits that long. But I think you need a rangy fast FS along with a decent coverage safety who can come up into the box as necessary. If you have two guys who are fast with good coverage skills and can tackle in the box then you're very versatile.

Coverages are very difficult to learn for me. They are pretty complicated.
