From my understanding, players mostly against it are the older vets who want nothing to do with a 17th game. But younger guys who make up the majority sees the 17th game as extra $$$$, not health risk.

Having been involved in union contracts before, the strategy is to divide and conquer. The NFL or any company will appeal to the majority of the membership. The younger workers almost inevitably view the short term money and that's understandable, while the veterans seek long term benefits. The NFL will frame the language to divide the membership to their advantage.

Its just business as usual.

I don’t want a 17th game because I will only make 250k. I am used to making at least double that. For some the game won’t count anyways so the starters will be rested for the playoffs or the season will be over and the game meaningless.
There is another twist to that. I would like to know what % of the players actually play all 16 games and how many plays are they actually on the field? I don't play DFS anymore but when I did, the injury report was full of skill position players every week.

It is incumbent on coaching to keep these players fresh and at their peak. It will be interesting to see how the coaches on teams playing for nothing, either wrapped up their spot in the playoffs or are looking at draft position, treat those last two games of the season. In a lot of instances, that 17th game may be more like the preseason game is it replacing.

If I am doing the scheduling, the last two games of the season would always be divisional games.

2 preseason games from what I heard .......
That will work. But the players won’t have as much time to make a team and coaches won’t get as much time to evaluate players. Starters may need more reps to get into game shape or the first few regular season games will be very sloppy.

Yeah with this new added game maybe they can schedule it to where teams that hardly ever play each other get a chance to go at it.

“If any player, on any one of our teams, if y’all are hurting for rent money or anything while we’re going through this lockout, call us. Man, we’ve got way more money than what they had back in the days. We ain’t got to worry about that. All the vets on each team, stand the (expletive) up. Stand up! Show these guys that we care about 'em.”

great post. I like the idea the last two games should have meaning and not amount to much more than preseason games with most of the starters sitting on the bench.

Aren’t they adding another team or 2 to the playoffs also. That’s gonna go a ways to make the game count for a couple of teams.

Now we can have a extra week to bite our nails when we come down to the end of season to make the playoffs.

Everyone who quoted me thanks guys for elaborating. Makes total sense now to as why the big name players are against it. Now I can see it getting done. Extra money in the pocket of the younger kids who have no security for the future.

From what I have read, most of the players you hear coming out against it tend to be higher tier paid players and players with upcoming contracts, who I would assume would be negatively impacted by the new CBA in some way.

That is not to say their opinions should be discounted (to each his own after all), but because of that, the media is more likely to seek out and report quotes by those players.

From the media standpoint, no one cares what a second or third string journeyman player thinks so they won't report as much (if any) of those.

The majority of the players however will likely benefit from various changes more than the higher paid players. Not to mention, the lesser paid players and their families likely need and depend on their current money more than the wealthy players who likely have significant money in their accounts already after receiving large contracts and/or playing in the NFL for many years.

Wonder if they are going to figure out the whole "rodger goddell has complete and absolute authority on all arbitrator matters".

Haven't heard that one brought up in the last 2 weeks, I know it's something most players/fans are vocal about

It seems there are more lower-tier players than those who are better established.

I think the majority will likely take control of the vote and approve of the new CBA.

Most of the players opposed to the new CBA are going to be out of the league by the time the CBA expires. They are considering what the CBA provides its retirees and more specifically what it does not provide its retirees.

If I’m the players I vote to fire Maurice Smith tbh. Man is trash as a union head imo. If the NFL does go 17 games I like the idea of making it a mandate that players can only play 16 out of the 17 games a season (Saw this idea on First Take).

It required 2/3 vote to pass, but I seen recently the NFLPA invoked some rule and now only requires a majority vote.
Most player fall into that majority. Especially with the average NFL career being 3.3 years. most will get a significant increase. So they will take it and if smart invest it wisely.
Are you sure about the 2/3 vote? I thought I read somewhere it was a simple majority vote?
