pulled this to its own thread so it doesnt clog overall NBA free agency thread.

with two Texas teams as participants I expect there to be plenty of takes.

and I have a ton of hot sports opinions to share here....

What was Morey thinking?

I have had a few basketball brains like David Lord and Skin Wade suggest Morey was planning to S&T Chandler Parsons.
They suggest that was why he declined the 995k option year.
I am not buying that as more than a possibility in the Morey plan.

I believe Morey felt the hammer of right to match would keep offers away and thus lower CP's market.
In that lower market he could get the deal done at the 4 for 32 they gave Ariza.
He'd have remained a fit in salary terms but also the teams most tradeable asset.

Why this?
I am going to rely on the words of Morey and CP as evidence here, along with basic logic.
Morey: Mavs were smart, they really wanted him. Never seen a more untradeable contract.
Parsons: I wanted to be a franchise priority, treated like a star. That's what Dallas told me they saw me as.

But also because as with Asik and Lin, Morey likes players he can use at good values

Mavs overpaid somewhat.

But a front line of Dirk Nowitzki, Tyson Chandler and Chandler Parsons looks pretty good!

I don't have much to add. I liked the guy. Didn't think he was worth the contract the Mavs gave him, but didn't want to lose him either, because he was one of the young guns. Oh well, that's the business of the NBA.

If I had a choice of:

1. Lose Parsons

or

2. Sign Bosh

Give me choice one every day. The Rockets dodged that over-payed bullet IMO. He would have probably made them better but he is not worth a max contract(at age 30) thus handcuffing them in the future.

The Rockets messed up by not trading him for Rondo(needed his defense) and now lost him for nothing :(

*Parsons was just one of six players who averaged at least 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists last season. The other six were LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Gordon Hayward and Michael Carter-Williams.

*Add a field goal percentage of 45.0 or better to the above statistical category and the list includes only James, Durant, Love and Parsons.

*In terms of rebounding and facilitating, Parsons was one of just nine players to average both 5.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists last season. The others were James, Durant, Love, Joakim Noah, Nicolas Batum, Lance Stephenson, Russell Westbrook and Carter-Williams.

*He's going to get paid in the ballpark of $15 million per year. Looking at small forwards who hovered around $12-15 million last season (Andre Iguodala, Luol Deng and Paul Pierce), here's where they stack up statistically.

Iguodala: 9.3 points, 4.7 boards, 48 percent shooting & 57% True shooting -- $12.5 million
Deng: 16.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 43% percent shooting & 52% True shooting -- $14 million
Pierce: 13.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 45% percent shooting & 60% True shooting -- $15 million
Parsons: 16.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 47% percent shooting & 56% True shooting

*Pace should come into play as well. Houston was one of the top teams in pace. Adjusting solely to per-100 possessions:
Pierce: 25/9
Deng: 24/9
Iguodala: 14/7
Parsons: 22/7

*Parsons delivered when teammates delivered the ball to him. He scored 64.4 percent of his points off assists.

*Parsons ran the break hard as 21.4 percent of his points came off fast breaks. He was second on the team in that department behind James Harden (27.3).

Parson's role in Dallas:

To me this is the biggest misnomer out there.
Parsons is 25 and ascending.
He is also plenty good right now and thus a legit role player who can handle heavy minutes.

But he's a 3rd option? Huh? No, not really.
Last year Dallas had Monta and Dirk basically split field goal attempts evenly. They both averaged ~18.
Of the next 6 players in attempts the team has lost 4 of them to free agency or trade.
They have been replaced by Tyson whose offense is basically alley oop dunks and Parsons.

Assuming CP gets Carter's AND Marion's field goals CP would be at the EXACT ~18 FG attempts per game.

Add that Dirk likely gets less shots and it is very possible CP leads the team in field goal attempts if only be a very small margin.

I agree the Rox couldn't/shouldn't match.
In their scheme and with what they needed to add he would have locked them up financially for a couple years.
But in Dallas CP is worth 15m a year for 3 years. His loss weakens a West rival and provides the outside shooting the team badly needed minus Calderon and VC.
His position flexibility means he can remain a legit offensive player in most rotations.

I stated at the start of this I'd rather have Parsons than Melo. That absolutely holds.

Had you kept Vince, I would be worried. However, I am thankful that you have weakened the Rockets for next season. Morey deserves this offseason. I love that they missed out on Bosh and Anthony and lost Parsons.

Good idea, I'd rather share my opinion on the signing on its own that whatever parsons/Kawhi comparisons thay started in the other one. First off, I agree it was so dumb for the rockets to let him off early from his rookie deal. But, I have a feeling that it was some sort of wink/wink deal for him and his agent getting Dwight in Houston.

As for the signing, I like the fit offensively, but I worry about having him and monte out there on defensive possessions, specially if they can't bring back the matrix. I think 15 million a year is a way too much for him, but if you want to tell me him and dirk combine for 23 million a year that makes it sound better. All in all it makes the mavs a lot better, albeit maybe less clutch, to replace Vince with chandler (and really who really knows at this point). If healthy, the mavs can challenge for the 4 seed I think, I still think the clips/spurs/thunder are a notch better than the mavs and the rest of the west as currently constituted

Another caveat, parsons hasn't really had any proper coaching, mchale is one of the all time greatest players, but he is a terrible coach! IMO Carlisle is the second best coach in the league. Parsons will improve tremendously with him as his coach. He has the tools to be at least a decent defender, if he can improve that he can be an all star level player.

Not sure what the Rockets are doing. They've gotten worse over the past 2 years and appear to be getting worser. There was a point when I thought Dwight was the 2nd best player in the NBA. He still might be the best center by default. I still don't see anyone competing with the Spurs and Thunder. Maybe the Warriors if they can get Love.

HOU has publicly offered Dirk the max.
They also called to say they would trade for him right after getting D12.
That was seen as a shot by Morey at the Mavs.

Part of their bad off-season is they pissed off Cuban who had great joy in forcing them into a box over Chandler Parsons.

Now that's just mean... :(

Morey has messed over the Spurs on numerous occasions, even when we acted in good faith. I have always hated the Rockets, so any basketball related misery that comes their way I will gladly rejoice in.

Cuban has WAY more resources and attitude to screw over teams if he wants to. I'd love to play for him, but I'd hate to have him as an enemy.
