Strictly a salary dump.

Fernandez wanted a defined role with the team or wanted to be bought out so he could continue playing in Spain, instead they traded him.

Brewer was a salary dump.

Mavs just traded Brewer and Rudy Fernandez to Nuggets for 2nd round pick....yikes..
A 2nd round pick in 2016!!

Damn, they couldn't get more than that for these guys... we sent the Jordan Hamilton pick to Portland for Fernandez, that turned into a pick 5 years down the road.

I'm hesitant to give too much criticism to the Mavs after their title, but this is just odd, salary dump or not.

Here is John Hollinger's take on the trade:

"Dallas also gets two small trade exceptions for its trouble, but the bigger prize may be that it cleared some more cap space for a run at Deron Williams this summer. The Mavs can have over $20 million in cap room if they cut Lamar Odom and amnesty Brendan Haywood."

That makes some sense. Cuban has been implying that they already have their eyes set beyond this season, so I can see them starting to maneuver to go after Williams or some big fish next summer.

They can't cut Lamar Odom.

Looks to me as if Cuban is doing the smart thing and setting himself up a chance to reload the team this summer and make multiple runs at the title, instead of just one more.

I like it.

Why would the Mavs have given up a 1st round draft pick for Odom if they were willing to cut him?

Rose is a RFA next year I think. Maybe everybody should just keep their powder dry and make a play for him next year. He's a better player, IMO, then anybody being currently discussed.

A contract extension is in the works for Rose so he won't be available.

I'm sure he will. He's a very humble kid and all he's talked about is how he wants to finish his career as a Bull.

I don't care what the kid said. If he hits next year as an RFA, I'm throwing the kitchen sink at him to try sign him. He's that good.

There's no way he doesn't sign the extension unless he's a total idiot. The Bulls are currently constructed especially with the addition of Rip Hamilton are a legit championship contender.

I really don't think he's going anywhere. He not only will make more money in Chicago, but it's a big market, and they're a legit championship contender.

I'm guessing that Hollinger mis-worded this. I believe Odom's contract runs through the upcoming year, with a team option for 2012/2013. They could just not exercise the team option for next year (what Hollinger probably meant) and I think that would save around $8 million.

Who are you going to play at center if you get rid of Haywood?

And who are you going to play at point guard in 2012/2013?

If it comes down next summer that the only thing standing in the way of them signing Deron Williams is amnestying Haywood, I'd be stunned if they hung on to Haywood. Williams is so much better at his position than Haywood is at his, no comparison there. I agree it leaves a hole at center, but I'd rather see them figure out center than pass on Williams.

One thing is the mavs didn't want a 1st round pick with a guaranteed salary next year. They want to free up as much cap space as they can.

I'm not sure that's true but the Mavs want the option to dump next years pick anyway since it's a guaranteed salary.

What part are you not sure is true? They did give up the 1st round pick, but if you aren't sure they would dump Odom right after trading for him then we are in agreement. All that would be doing is dumping a 1st round draft pick and getting nothing in return.
