So they traded a top 3 star to the biggest market team, Lakers, and didn’t even consider trading him anywhere else? Where they could’ve gotten exponentially more in return? All this while LeBron and LA was clinging to a play-in spot for the playoffs and the NBA ratings are falling off a cliff? Something smells fishy. Either Doncic was adamant about going there and no one is saying it or there are other forces at work.
Luka was stunned. He didn't push for this.
Luka and the front office were having petty squabbles because he took a 2-month break after the Finals. His first real break in 4 years!!!!
But he was never in top shape to start seasons, and they hated that, so they fired the best trainer in the league and didn't allow Luka's personal guys on site. Luka dug in and did even less. He was injured and couldn't do real cardio but drank beer and smoked hookah.
Mad they lost JB who was his best friend on the team for nothing and mad they fired Casey Smith he hung out with his Dad.
He was going to have to play his way into shape making it a bad season for him.
Rather than appease Luka they traded him in the middle of the night without shopping him to the League or giving anyone a heads up this was coming.
It will get Nico fired and very likely end his NBA career. It will cost the Adelsons a projected 100+ Million dollars!!!
They are already losing 10s of millions in just this partial season.
They built the franchise and the financial model around Luka. Now they do not have him and are basically an expansion franchise the nights AD and Kyrie can't go.
To make matters even worse Kyrie has a player option next year. He can opt in for 44M or become a free agent. The injury would appear to lock him in, but it only buys 1 season in which he is not expected to be ready to go as it kicks off. He has to decide by 6-25 so he is locked in or out before free agency starts.
Mavs are WELL over the cap.
This isn't bleak this is a Russian literature novel.
The best answer going forward is probably fire Nico, fire Kidd, trade AD/Kyrie/Klay/Gafford to recoup assets and cap space. --tough to do because you don't want the cap hits coming back.
Tank as hard as has ever been tanked next year.
Focus on developing Lively, Kai Jones, Brandon Willaims, Jalen Hardy, OMax, Christie.
