Maybe we don't need another LB, but...

I'm watching the USC/Illinois game and I'm really liking Rey Maualuga. I haven't watched a lot of USC, I'm not a fan of the team, but he reminds me of Lofa Tatupu and a little bit of Urlacher, in that he's a big, solid guy but looks confident when in zone coverage, seems like he knows where he is and gets from sideline to sideline quick too.

Also seems like he may be available in the 2nd round, although we would probably had to trade up to get him. Maybe he could replace Akin, and eventually maybe Bradie.

He's been laying some wood out there too.

You're preaching to the choir. LB is my favorite position on any team.

we run a 3-4 defense, so we're always going to need to keep adding LBs, even if they are just late-round and undrafted developmental types

i agree that he is a beast at LB, however i remember hearing earlier this season that both he and Cushing decided long ago to come back for their senior seasons.

so it is unlikely that he declares, though i guess anything is possible...

i also think that if he was to enter the draft he would most likely be a top 20 pick

Ah, wasn't aware of that. Guess there's always next year. Maybe we'll work another trade for a second first rounder for next year.:

I certainly wouldn't take another one early, but I would take a shot later in the draft.

Often you can fine a nice ILB at that stage.

I think if we replaced Akin Ayodele with a more active player, we would be better off.

I never understood what we saw in him to sign him to a free agent contract and I still do not.

He's not horrible. He's not good. He just--is.

I don't think there's any doubt we draft a LB -- an ILB -- in the first few rounds and/or get one in free agency. Wade's going to want a faster, more active style of player than what Parcells wanted... Meaning more athletic guys like Burnett than only bigger guys who are 250+.

That's going to be one of my favorite things this offseason, to see what changes he wants to make to the players on defense he inherited.

Yep, even at the expense of other positions.

Just line the LB's up ... doesn't matter that we use 1st round picks to be 3rd stringers. Just keep gettin' them LB's.

 my following post suggests that we should collect developmental types w/ late-round picks, and sign some undrafted ones

if one thing that Bill brought here which was smart, was the churning the bottome of the barrel idea

It doesn't matter how many picks we've used if they (um, Carp) can be improved upon.

And see, you're not on ignore, Bob... Just didn't want to bump that thread. :)

Or Shawn Crable of Michigan, a good OLB. Most likley will be round 2 or so pick. He is kind of like David Harris IMO. Playmaker and non-stop motor kind of guy.

Yeah I believe Crable will be a monster too, how much does he weigh though, you have to be thick to play OLB in the 3-4.

Did Wade churn the barrel as much as Bill? My impression is he didn't.

I'm a USC fan so I'm biased but I'd go crazy if we got Maualuga. He is a game changing defender and would make one hell of an ILB next to Bradie James. If he was available when the Cowboys picked they'd have to seriously consider him.

Maualuga and Brian Cushing have said they would return but have also submitted their paperwork to the Draft Advisory Committee so who knows. Cushing is another player who would look good in a Cowboy uniform. Since his freshman year, he has started at Safety, Defensive End, and Linebacker. He's 6-4, 265 lbs. and runs a 4.6 40. You could line him all over the place in a 3-4 defense.

The ILB I'd like to take a stab at is Brendan Larsen from the Arizona Wildcats.

Homer alert.

I suspect he'll grade out to a 3rd or 4th round pick. Safe spot to develop. He has very good football instincts. Reminds me a bit of Zach Thomas but is bigger. Always around the ball.
