Maybe we don't need another LB, but...

Actually I've been thinking for a while that we need to upgrade the ILB spot that Ayodele plays. My reasoning is simply that I don't believe our secondary is solely the problem in our inability protect the middle of the field. I really believe we need an ILB whose really good in pass coverage as well as against the run -- an Urlacher type.

Also while most of us agree we must draft a high round CB (along with RB & WR), I also think we need some help on our defense. Gotta wonder what Phillips really thinks about some of our defensive players. He's seen these guys play for a whole year and certainly knows who can produce in his 34 system. Maybe the 1-2 players he doesn't believe can get the job done for us (not necessary including Carpenter in this), we might dangle to Parcells if these guys fit the Miami scheme or whatever scheme will be played there in the future.

He'd be fantastic in Ayodele's spot.

I certainly wouldn't take another one early, but I would take a shot later in the draft.

Often you can fine a nice ILB at that stage.

I think if we replaced Akin Ayodele with a more active player, we would be better off.

I never understood what we saw in him to sign him to a free agent contract and I still do not.

He's not horrible. He's not good. He just--is.
J Leman of Illinois would fit the bill. I didn't watch much of this game (had other plans), but in the past he's been pretty notable.

I'm watching the USC/Illinois game and I'm really liking Rey Maualuga. I haven't watched a lot of USC, I'm not a fan of the team, but he reminds me of Lofa Tatupu and a little bit of Urlacher, in that he's a big, solid guy but looks confident when in zone coverage, seems like he knows where he is and gets from sideline to sideline quick too.

Also seems like he may be available in the 2nd round, although we would probably had to trade up to get him. Maybe he could replace Akin, and eventually maybe Bradie.

He's been laying some wood out there too.

Can he beat out Carpenter?:bang2:

Yeah I believe Crable will be a monster too, how much does he weigh though, you have to be thick to play OLB in the 3-4.

I think he big enough, probably needs to get 10-15 lbs more though. He listed around 245 right now. But he does play OLB in 3-4 sorta defense in Big 10 against big OL. So he should be able to adapt.

But for late 2nd rounder, I think he would be worth the pick or if he slips maybe 3rd rounder would be good one. I just like his motor and he simply makes plays.

Like Parcells, I think the Steelers set the precedent on linebackers by drafting at least one every year.

As Bob said, you can never have enough LBs.

I don't care who they get as long as they can challenge Akin and, yes, even Bradie.

Well I was thinking more ILB than OLB. I would assume Ware isn't going anywhere and I'd like to see Spencer on the other side eventually.

Better yet, what do you think the 49ers would take for Patrick Willis? :)

He's 6'3" 250 pounds and looks like he has the athleticism we need at ILB. However, he may go in the top 20 if he has a good combine. Perhaps we get him in the 2nd round if he falls.

Akin Ayodele is The Milk Man, Part II.

You don't notice him until he's gone.

Right. Guys like Ayodele are the backbone of the team. For every Howley, Ware, Norton, and Henderson there needs to be a Dave Edwards, D.D. Lewis, Vinson Smith, and Dixon Edwards.

Yes he would. He is an athletic beast, can cover and pressure up the middle. He has the frame to gain weight, its not an issue.
