Mayock's top 5 cornerbacks for 2012 NFL draft: 1) Mo Claiborne 2) Janoris Jenkins 3) Alfonzo Dennard 4) Leonard Johnson 5) Dre Kirkpatrick.

Very, very interesting...

That is very interesting. CB is one position that Mayock supposedly specializes in, no?

Well, that Scouts Inc. grade might not be updated.

Here's their breakdown on Johnson, for anybody interested. Their number grading scale is the following....

1 = Exceptional
2 = Above average
3 = Average
4 = Below average
5 = Marginal

Leonard Johnson CB Iowa St.
5'10", 193 lbs.

Cornerback Specific Traits

Instincts/Recognition: 2
Overall diagnostic skills are solid. He shows good awareness in zone coverage and does a nice job of maintaining strong position to mark targets coming in and out of his territory. Flashes ability to anticipate but route recognition skills are still developing at this point. Recognizes and reacts to screens well. Plays with confidence and does not go into the tank when getting beat. Displays good versatility and has experience lining up at the nickel-back position in the slot.

Cover Skills: 3
A quick-twitched athlete that displays above-average movement skills. Stays low and is natural in back pedal. Feet are always underneath him and he shows good balance to quickly transition when changing directions. However, appears quicker than fast on tape and closing burst is good but not great. Overall range is just average and did not see an extra gear to recover once caught in trail position during film study.

Ball Skills: 3
Good but not great in this department. Locates the ball, takes good angles to the point and puts himself in solid position. Flashes quick hands to separate the ball from the receiver. However, not much of a playmaker to finish plays at this point. Needs to work on timing leaps with more consistency. Hands are just average as well. Also can be pushed around by bigger and more physical receivers in one-on-one jump ball situations.

Run Support: 2
Plays bigger than measureables indicate in this department. Makes a quick diagnosis and will set the edge. Aggressive disengaging from blocks. Generally takes sound angles to the ball and is a solid wrap-up tackler. May have issues getting bigger and more powerful ball carriers to the ground in the open field.

I have been saying for a month now that Kirkpatrick was over rater and Janoris Jenkins was the 2nd best CB in the draft, but people call me crazy and says I don't know anything. Glad to see someone else agree with.

I don't know much about Johnson, but he is a good player, but I wouldn't say he is better than Kirkpatrick but I haven't seen enough of him.

Johnson is a pretty big reach. That seems like 1 of those bold claims someone makes to draw interest to their articles. I'll admit that I haven't seen much of him, but I just find it hard to believe that Mayock somehow sees something that no one else sees in Johnson.

Scouts Inc is alot like CBSSports. they take for every to update their rankings.

I think you're right. When I was doing my mock, I noticed some players listed twice with different grades, players missing and players who decided to return to school still listed.

what I read and see form Johnson, he looks great for a 3-4 man cover CB.

Analysis
Man Coverage: Backpedal is low and quick, allowing him to adjust to any routes when bailing off the line. Possesses speed to recover from picks or good route sells. Locks up larger receivers off the line in press, has speed to stay with them down the sideline. Tends to be overly physical at times, drawing penalty flags. Owns good vertical and plays tough in jump ball situations, but veteran NFL receivers will be more likely to take advantage of height and strength discrepancies.

Zone Coverage: Heady zone defender. Sticks with crossing receivers if needed, while also reading deep routes to prevent throws over the top. Plays boundary and field sides equally well.
Ball Skills: Better at knocking the ball away than making the tough interception. Fair hands to make the play when closing on throws in front of him. Usually finds the ball when looking back in man, but it is often enough able to make the quick catch.

Run Support: Tough enough to handle run support responsibilities on the outside. Plays with leverage and sheds against most receiver blocks, though NFL receivers will use their size more effectively against him.

Tackling: Thick, compact corner with strength to bring down larger receivers by wrapping or cutting out their legs. Generally dependable zone tackler who gives up few yards after the catch to his receiver. Comes across the field, takes deep angles to help teammates prevent big plays. Tries to make the big hit and shoulder ballcarriers to the ground at times, however, and will miss cut tackles on occasion.
Intangibles: Plays with strong attitude and a short memory. Vocal leader on the field, directs traffic. Has grown since ejection against UNLV his freshman year. No known character concerns.

Here's a couple more current top 5 CB rankings....

Kiper - 1) Claiborne, 2) Kirkpatrick, 3) Dennard, 4) Jenkins, 5) Gilmore

Scouts Inc. - 1) Claiborne, 2) Kirkpatrick, 3) Dennard, 4) Jenkins, 5) Minnifield

Pretty similar pecking order.

Yeah, you have to watch that but right about this time of year they usually get it updated.

When you go into their rankings they don't specify when the last update was, so you're left to guess.

Heard Iowa CB Shaun Prater looked good at East-West Shrine Game

bad news/good news for two of my mocked players.

OLB Vinny Curry and DE Kendall Reyes had outstanding practices today. I was kind of hoping that they would fly under the radar so the Cowboys could pounce on them in the 2nd and 4th rounds, but if they keep it up, Curry could go as late as late 1st round and Reyes might go late 2nd, early 3rd.

Is there anyway Jenkins could fall down to the 2nd round?

I don't want to say for sure, but going by recent history, Jenkins is probably not even on the Cowboys' draft board ( at least first 3 rounds ) because of the off the field issues.

I think he's probably going to...

I wonder if he dropped Kirkpatrick because of the weed thing?

I get that Jenkins is still #2, but he's a better talent than Kirkpatrick. I don't think he's a borderline top-10 pick if the character issues were there early.

WesBunting Wesley Bunting
#Nebraska CB Alfonzo Dennard had a tough time turning and running with receivers, didn't have a burst or 2nd gear, 4.6 guy? #seniorbowl

I'm a Husker fan and I wouldn't draft him in the 1st round.
