Mazi or Guyton, who are you ready to go to battle with?

Lots of question marks for both players, one has been in the league a few more years, both have the potential to be solid players in the league. With that said, they've struggled as first round picks, but we shouldn't write them off and continue to be patient.

With that said, which player would you pick to go to battle with?? Please give your thoughts

Guyton was always supposed to be a developmental LT. Everyone said it last yr after he was drafted. Ppl got in their feelings about him too quick. I’ll make my judgment after yr 3.

He should not have been playing yet, much less starting. Shoving him into the OLT role immediately was just dumb.

It's probably not as bad of a question as many think it is. The only real difference is Mazi has struggled for two NFL seasons, Guyton has struggled for just one NFL season.

Guyton
23 years old (June birthday)
668 NFL snaps
1,092 college snaps

Mazi
23 years old (June birthday)
828 NFL snaps
1,227 college snaps

Overall I'm not very high on either player, but both should probably be viewed similarly in terms of development time. Mazi technically has more time in the league, but overall has seen the field just slightly more than Guyton has. Both drafted as high physical traits guys that needed development.

Gun to my head I would take Guyton, but I'd rather have a 3rd option ;)
Perfect response.

Also proof that you DO NOT take "physical traits" guys in the first round. That is where you take "High production" guys.

I'm sorry, but at this point, I am completely sour on Michigan Defensive linemen.

Not necessarily. Some ppl do well with being thrown in the deep end. How he develops this offseason and during his year 2 campaign will tell us a lot about whether or not it was smart to start him. He was improving as a run blocker and his penalties had stopped. He was benched because of an injury and the coaches wanted a vet to keep the spot because the season was going down the toilet.

Lol. Don't judge them yet. Give them another two decades in the league before we judge them as busts.

Yes they are one bust after another like Alabama running backs were before Derrick Henry.

Exactly.

Teams should be very hesitant to use the underwear Olympics traits shown by players at the combine over what the actual college tape production showed.

Basic scouting 101 stuff.

do I have to choose? or is neither an option?

Too soon to tell with Guyton. I keep reading mock drafts where Dallas takes a DT and the analysts makes statements like this DT or that DT would be an immediate upgrade over Mazi Smith. That is just awful for Mazi.

Possibly. If he learned from last season and comes out utilizing his tremendous physical traits and we meant to throw away last season, then yes, good move.

And I don't mind tossing away a season or two for future success. It's almost necessary to achieve the big goal.

Coogles would be an upgrade over Mazi.

We could only wish. 2 of our first 3 picks should be DTs. But this has happened before, and we traded up for an overrated CB and took Crawford. Look for more of the same. Takes smart GM to draft DTs, it's extremely difficult.

Why are we overthinking this?

We drafted two 1st round busts.

Accept it ....move on

Stop with the mental gymnastics trying to paint a rosey picture. When you HIT on a first round pick, you aren't asking these questions after a full season or 2 full seasons. They suck. Try not to draft sucky players this time. End of story
