I fell like the last 10 years or so they have mostly drafted best available player and it has gone well. However there are a few times were they lock into a position and take the best player left and it almost never works. This looks to be one of those times.

I don't know where you got your stats or if we're talking about the same Chris Jones. The Chris Jones (Kansas City) I referenced had 6 tackles in his
first three games back in 2016.
Daron Payne had five solo tackles in his first game. Harrison Phillips, a 3rd round pick, had 10 tackles in his 1st three games.
Maybe Mazi will be a Chris Jones in a few years. We don't want to expect too much from a 1st round pick.

It’s really tough to learn that position. Anyone that expected him to dominate as a rookie was just fooling themselves. Year 3 is the time to judge, not game 3

PFF wrote an article saying that Mazi has not had a negative graded play in his first 2 games.

Now he only had 1 or 2 positive plays, so he's basically doing replacement level work on part-time snaps. But zero big losses is all I need to see for a rookie NT. If he's out there holding his ground, and his head's not spinning, he's on the right track. He will grow stronger and pick up more nuances of the game later, and that's when he'll go from big body to difference maker.

It took osa 3 years to come on just relax. DT is notorious for having a large learning curve. He was basically a 2nd round pick so stop comparing him to top 5 picks.

I used ESPN. And I was wrong, Chris had 5 tackles instead of 6.

Just for the facts, he had 4 tackles the first 3 games as a rookie DT.

Smith doesn't play a sexy position nor is he asked/forced to play a lot of snaps.
It takes guys drafted even higher at that position to develop.

Wilkins took 3 years to fully develop into the run stopper he is. Never quite developed that pass move though.
Dexter Lawrence wasn't a stud year 1.

If Dallas wanted an impact year 1 player then taking a 1/0 tech wasn't the best move lol

Jordan Davis had 1 tackle in his first 3 games last year and he had 20+ more plays than Mazi.

Davis had 8 tackles in the first 3 games of his rookie season. Where are you getting your stats? Try ESPN.
