Sure hope he doesn’t have to play against Avila and TCU again where he was partially responsible for giving up 260+ yards rushing….mostly right up the gut.
He was double teamed allot and never really saw him get blown off the line, add in Michigans D was ranked astronomically high (bad), surround this guy with the talent we have and get your popcorn ready!

This pick is an acknowledgment by the front office that the interior D line is a weakness in the run defense. In theory, they are filling a great need. Only time will tell how well this now publicly identified deficiency has been addressed. Best wishes to the Cow pokes.

Uh, no he wasn't. Stop repeating stupid RJ from the radio.

Huge chunks of those yards came away from him. I am very sure his game vs them was a big reason why the cowboys love him.

If you want to watch him...

I’ve seen this video. And I’m still confused. Not trying to be inflammatory or anything but honestly what about his play in this video excites you?
Here’s what I saw:
1) rarely any push
2) did not require a double team
3) zero pash rush
4) regularly stayed blocked
5) team ram right past him, esp the QB
6) SLOW off the snap

Considering how Duggan ram past him, can’t wait to see what Hurtz does.
I sincerely hope I can come here and say I was wrong in 12 months or so but I didn’t see Mazi as draftable.

I hope so, but the TCU tape would’ve completely taken him off the board for me.

Played college ball with a NT that was also a world junior medalist in powerlifting. Legit 500# bench and 750# squat in comps. For some reason our stupid college tested the bench at #250 instead of #225 like everyone else. He did 37 reps. Freakishly strong, not good at football.
Point being weight room strength doesn’t always show on the field. Not saying that’s the case with Mazi Smith but it happens. Smith was a bit of a reach but he fills a need for a 2 down run stuffer.

Did you watch this? He got abused repeatedly in the 3rd quarter.

I hate to be negative as I LOVE the fact that they took a DT, but if you watch that video it was not impressive and I agree with all of your points. Hopefully he can develop.

My only hope is that he’s a better pro than he was college player due to our coaching and off-season training. I have a hard time seeing him as better than Hankins right now and Mazis tape isn’t much better than Bohanna’s was coming out.

I watched it yes.

Not sure how you and the other guy evaluate players but clearly have to work on it some more.
