I wouldn’t be comparing him with Jonathan Hankins. If the Cowboys thought he was anything special they wouldn’t have burned a first round pick on Mazi.
You need more than one big guy. You can’t use Hankins playing the first snap of the game as proof that Mazi is a disappointment. Just because you expected Mazi to “start” doesn’t make it a valid point. Mazi didn’t play bad at all for his first game ever in the NFL.
You’re locked in to the thinking that you have a starter and a backup. That isn’t really what Quinn is doing here. Hankins and Mazi are both going to play and get a lot of snaps… probably close to equal, I suspect.
Quinn rotates so much on the DL that most of them up and down the line are going to play a lot. That is even more so at NT when you have to keep those big guys fresh.
Sometimes (like short yardage) Quinn is going to have both Hankins and Mazi in at the same time. My guess would be Mazi at 3T and Hankins at the 1 or 0. Sometimes, he won’t have either in (like third and long). If a team is trying to run a lot, Quinn will play them both a lot. If Dallas is way ahead like they were Sunday night, neither big guy will get a lot of snaps.
The team didn’t draft Mazi to take over a starting position from Hankins, who played well last year. They drafted him to help Hankins. The guys who were rotating with Hankins last year is who Mazi replaced (Bohanna and Watkins). When Hankins does hang it up, they’ll probably draft someone at that point to replace him.
