Who thinks we could possibly see an MB3 rule next year regarding the way he straight arms oponents? He has really been layin some wood to defenders lately. The Patriots actually complained that it is more of a punch than a straight arm. I can seen a new rule next year

Never. As long as stiff arms are legal (and they will always be legal), you can't make a "punch" illegal.

How do the refs distinguish between a good stiff arm and "Hey, you can't stick your arm out that hard".

It doesn't make sense. Walter Payton has one of the greatest stiff arms I've ever seen. Just like Marion.

Well they made the horse collar rule. Why not this? I think the horse collar rule is one of the worst to come along in a looong time. Its getting to the point where we might as well put flags on the players.

After watching tons of NFL Films and Documentaries on RB's, Barber reminds me of a mixture of Earl Cambell, Walter Payton, and Jim Brown......your thoughts??

I love Barber's "club", but they outlawed Deacon Jones' head-slap, so it's a very real possibility that they would do the same w/ Barber's club which is very similar in ferociousness

but it would be a travesty if they do, that is such a beautiful thing

Yeah, people aren't getting hurt and it gives the offense an advantage so it will remain legal.

Is there any way that can be construed as illegal hands to the face? Or is that only a penalty if you dont have the ball in your hands?

Has Marion's straight arm/punch led to any injuries? No.

Roy's horse collar was VERY dangerous and I think it was right to prohibit that. This is different.

Barber does it knowing full well that the next time he gets the ball, the other guys will be looking to kill him rather than take a punch in the face.

When you horse collar someone on defense, they've got no recorse.

A stiff arm and what he does are two different things. What he does is closer to what Erik Williams did except he does his straight on and Erik Williams would do it from the side. (head slap) If he continues, it will be outlawed.

Erik Williams head slap didn't injury anyone, but it became illegal.

Pretty sure it's the latter. I believe it's even legal to grab the facemask when you're the ball carrier.

The way the League is, I wouldn't be surprised, but I doubt it! I love the way the MB3 punches that straight arm out there; it gives defenders something to think about when they're attempting to tackle him!

it is, which is why banning Barber's club would be stupid and hypocritical

Figuring I saw over 3 stiff arms like that this weekend I doubt it. Lendall White did it on a run in the Titians game for another example of seeing it

Patriots are the last team that need to be complaining about anything, considering the ILLEGAL nonsense they get away with...

The competition commitee would have to deem it unsportsmanlike for them to make a rule about it.

Personally, I don't see it as unsportsmanlike at all. Its just a different style of a stiff arm.

MB3 is enormously entertaining. He gets everything possible out of his physical abilities.

He lacks the top speed of most of the elite backs. If he had the raw speed to go along with his ability to make yards after contact, IMO he'd be a top tier Hall of Fame back.

Any comparison is ultimately flawed, of course, but I think of MB3 as a throwback "brusier" type of running back. Larry Csonka comes to mind.
