I’m not sure I would call this flying by the seat of their pants. Seems reasonable that this was the plan all along. See what shakes out at final cutdowns and if nothing comes along, there are several vets that could be brought in. Peters and others have been out there all along so it makes sense that they simply kept all their options open by waiting for final cutdowns. This is exactly what they should do. In my mind, they played it just right. That does not mean they shouldn’t have added a vet OT long ago. I just mean after Tyron’s injury, I think they will have played it exactly right if they go sign a decent veteran OT now.
They played it right only due to the fact that someone like Peters was available. Had he not been a FA you’d be looking at marginal to replacement level guys coming in.
I think the overall plan wasn’t bad. Draft your current LG and have him become the LT of the future in a year or two once Tyron can’t go anymore. The only thing is that plan should’ve had a third part. We know Tyron has the propensity to get hurt, so along with drafting a raw yet talented guy in the first, you had to have a reliable vet swing to offset the possibility of another Tyron injury.
I get that they wanted Ball/Waletzko to win that swing job but after a week or two in camp you could see that 5th round OT’s aren’t always immediately ready to contribute. Especially since Ball is basically a rookie with his redshirt last year. I think they should have brought Peters or whatever reliable vet in earlier so they could avoid the complications I just posted a thread about.
Not a terrible plan; but they left out a key component.
