McClay Interview on Draft

He did have 3 picks
But if he is powerless then it means he’s also not responsible lol
I don’t know how many of these picks were his picks or coaches picks
How much the coaches pushed certain traits rather than just best player
If a 6’4” guy can be a great CB then that’s great
But no better than a 6’0” becoming a great CB
I have some worries about putting size over ability but I hope I’m wrong
I mean....I get it.

And this is pure assumption on my part but I don't think McClay or these scouts go into a draft and pick certain players they want. I think they scout these guys and determine who has a future in this league.

I don't know if picking guys with certain measurables are going to work but I at least somewhat feel happy that they have a plan and they are trying to put it in motion. If this plan fails we already known its going to come back to bite them. But I don't feel like under Maranelli this defense had a identity or a plan. The only thing they consistently did was refuse to get a big boy at nose tackle. That was their plan lol.

That's who I thought when I seen McCray Haha good ole Danny McCray the great safety
LSU product.......on another note......LSU products haven't been kind to the NFL at all especially on defense. Only guy I can think about in recent memory is Pat Peterson. Hoping Jabril Cox will change that. Bradie James gave us some good years.

Round 1. 2, and 4 were good rounds. But if round 3 turns out to be a disaster with three picks, then McCray is either a useless idiot or powerless eunuch and will need to go.
Pick 99 looks like a Dan Quinn pick to me.
There is no way....zero....that McClay and his staff and Wright rated that highly.
They may've liked him, but not at 99. Does not fit McClays m.o. whatsoever.
They had 2 extra 3rds and threw one as a bone to the new coach.

But someone earlier in this thread McClay was at one time the possibly the best in the business.....and that's lunacy.
Lets start with Ozzie Newsome....

One thing I’ve learned in two draft interviews today alone...many peoples excuses about Rd 3 ratings hold no water. I kept getting pushback post draft saying the big board media people don’t interview, etc but honestly neither did the scouts. McClay said In a DMN interview that they really relied on scouts from watching in person and film. There was less 1 v 1 with Covid. So a lot was on film. I think fhere is huge upside to this draft. I’m excited but I also think some moves will be a referendum in how well we scout.

If you have 7 minutes to spare, I thought this was a good interview about the draft. Some nuggets on a few players, the board when it comes to BPA and need, and offense vs defensive players.

I thought it was interesting that as the draft went on, teams started to go heavy on need and not BPA and that is how Cox slipped.

So basically the Cowboys drafted exactly how you should...Best Available Player Of Need (BAPON).

maybe a bigger bodied and longer armed CB will start making some picks. there has been a turnover drought in dallas for a long time.

I wish we would determine a defensive philosophy and still to it like Steelers and ravens
Doesn’t matter who the HC or DC is, it’s basically the same system
Seems the best way to build a team for the long haul
And they have a good defense every year

It’s not an easy job nor an exact science until you’ve walked in a man shoes **** and let’s be happy that we’re above the average

Tre'Davious White, honey badger
All i'm saying is since 2010 with all the elite college players they on on defense...I feel like Tre White and Jamal Adams lived up to the hype as did Peterson. I'd say Danielle Hunter and Honey Badger exceeded exceptions....can't think of anyone else...maybe you can add Devin White to that list as well.......just seems like for all those 1st and 2nd round prospects that I hear about every year...seems like they fizzle out.

I see what you're saying. I honestly just want to field a good defense no matter what the scheme is. Ravens and Steelers do have a system in place...but what they have on defense is what we have on offense. I'm sure they wish they had a better and more consistent offense in place to go with those defenses.....

I will say....if Quinn builds this defense up and becomes a HC candidate again.....it seems like we will bless screwed because we don't have that guy in place. Whether we liked him or not it seems like Kris Richard was that for Maranelli and before that was Kiffin to Maranelli. If Quinn does what they hope.....they are going to be in a bad situation.

Kelvin Joseph was LSU at first, so not sure if that counts if he turns out. Patrick Queen was decent his rookie year.

I don't think LSU want to claim Joseph lol....Jabril Cox also started off at North Dakota State......

Patrick Queen...I'd watch him and he looked decent to me...seems like a lot of reports came out how bad he was..he's a rookie so I wasn't going to put him in that either way.

Mcclay was arguably the best in the business. I know we’ve slacked on some defensive picks but mcclay isn’t totally to blame when the scouts wanted tj watt among others and the coaching staff got their way.

this year mcclay and Quinn could’ve put together a fabulous defensive draft. Let’s hope. Mcclay track record continues with caliber of players he suggests.

Laughably, not arguably.

From Reports Scouts and McClay wanted other players at certain spots and Coaches over ruled them. so honestly if this draft sucks i'm blaming my cousin Danny, family or no i bleed Silver and blue
I would love, heck I would pay to see the draft board and get information on who Will wouldve drafted over who......Then we could all see how ****ed up this organization is from the top.
