McFadden as a Starter

Rushing Yards/Game
since week 7
1 Peterson 102.4 (88.4)
2 Martin 100.0 (90.5)
3 McCoy 90.0 (94.1)
4 Stewart 86.4 (104.9)
5 McFadden 85.4 (64.3)

The number is parentheses is the team's passer rating since week 7.

Great point! Not a huge McFadden fan prior this season, but he's the type of backup RB you want to split carries with your starter. He's earned a spot on the team next year for sure but shouldn't negate drafting one early and letting them compete for the starting role.

We still have McFadden for another year, there is no reason to cut him and no reason to sign him for any longer. I'd look into signing Miller, Morris, or Martin in FA - if we can't get one of them, hopefully we can get a top RB in this draft. Henry might fall into the second and we should be in position to draft him.

But McFadden is not a starter in this league despite his good games here and there this season. We can all sit here and look at the numbers and post the statistics, but he's not the same runner as Murray. Murray wore defenses down by being a bruiser.

Not this year he hasn't.

That was the knock on Murray too.
They both stayed healthy all of last season, as well as all of this season so far.

Murray is a lot younger with less miles.. But he's due for a stretch of health so just have a good back up for insurance.. We have bigger holes in other areas...

McFadden's a loser. You'd have to be out of your mind to trust him as your lead back going forward. He's the kind of guy to disappear in big games and then have some nice production when nobody really cares anymore.

I've seen nothing this year that would make me want him starting another game after this season.

Plus he's old. We have to build for the future. With a QB, RB and WR. We need them all. Darren McFadden shouldn't even factor into it.

A loser? Dumb post...

I thought he looked good last night.

But stats only tell half the story. My eyes tell me that he goes down too easily and only gets what is available. In space he has some burst to get round the edge but not enough top end speed to out run the DBs. He's serviceable when you've got nothing better but if we got a blue chip RB behind this line, I think we'd see something spectacular instead of being mildly happy with something just above average.

McFadden has been decent here, but we need excellent at the RB position, especially with the simple schemes we run. McFadden is a nice change of pace back, but to make him a bellcow is going to leave us stranded when he inevitably goes down from all those carries.

The last 9 games he's basically been the starting tailback on this team.

In that time frame he has ran for 769 yards on 171 carries. An average of 4.497 yards per carry. If this was prorated over 16 games, he would be on pace for 1,367 rushing yards for the season.

But, this is with 6 quarters of Romo and the rest with Matt Cassel at QB. A Dez Bryant that hasn't looked the same (and it didn't matter, Cassel couldn't get the ball there anyway).

I don't think the short yardage situation is all his fault (Turbin can't get short yardage either). But, a healthy McFadden really means that RB should be well down the list of priorities next season. Jerry was right...McFadden can run behind this O-Line. Not every RB can run behind this O-Line, but McFadden can. And at a fraction of the price of what it would have cost to have re-signed Murray.

YR

Well put. Still not entirely sold, but good post.

Can't rely on him to stay healthy though. Need quality depth.

Good point.

He went down in Oakland because they were morons the way they used him. Literally NO pass threat, average to poor o-line play compounded by idiotic play calling.
It was like handing the keys to a new sports car to a re-tard and then wondering why the clutch keeps going out.

He is due 1.8m next year so his contract is reasonable.

But they should should draft a stud early in the draft.

Dunbar and Turbin are FAs so they aren't guaranteed to return.

Things are depressing enough around here. Don't talk about Dunbar possibly not coming back.

My only complaint against McFadden is his lack of a cut move. It hinders his ability to run in a zone scheme. Now, he is good and sometimes very good running behind man blocking.
