I think it had more to do with Orton being available and less about what they think about McGee. If Orton hadn't been available, I'm almost certain we'd be going into this season with McGee as our backup.
Remember, we were still in contention for the playoffs last year with an injured Romo, and we hung with McGee as our primary backup without going out and getting a veteran to replace Kitna. The only one we made a play for was Orton.
It seems to me that this team likes Orton over McGee, but they don't really like anyone else over McGee.
I don't agree. If they thought McGee could cut it at QB2, he'd have gotten a shot. I understand sticking with the guy for one game at the end of the season, but with an offseason to get a replacement up to speed, there was very little chance we were going to sit tight with Kitna gone.
As I implied earlier, I think Carpenter's got a better chance of sticking on this team, but we'll see what happens in the game. Either way, I want a developmental guy on a multi year deal in McGee's spot.
