All this talk about this CB or that CB having a bad game, being burned by that team or that WR, to justify not drafting a particular CB is a lot of hogwash. Every great CB has occasional bad days or a particular WR he cannot cover.
Best example: Deion Sanders couldn't cover Michael Irvin. The Playmaker burned him time and time again. Look at the NFC championship game after the 94 season. Irvin caught 12 for 192 yards, and on one play he was open for a TD on a long pass from Troy and Deion pulled in Michael, but refs did not call holding.
So if the Boys were able to project Byron Jones to be a solid CB in the NFL, coming out of a tiny football school, based upon his athletic skills and films on him, then I do not believe the Boys will blow a CB selection this year with whomever they choose at 17, in a trade down or in the 2nd round. Nevertheless,a top CB must be taken, as it is easier to get a safety than a top CB. Which Cowboy CB before Byron made the Pro Bowl? In the last 20 years, only one CB, Terrance Newman, making it until Byron! It is time to draft high a super CB.
Let us remember, we developed a # 1 pick in Byron, he leaves us and we get nothing in compensation this year, so we have to burn a high pick on a replacement, whose performance will probably be much lower than Byron. This is at the expense of other needs, like kick-*** defensive linemen. A 3rd round comp pick is BS. In baseball, a team which loses a star gets a comp pick at end of first round. Guess who in baseball was a comp pick,the third #1 that team had in 1993, none other than Aaron Judge.
This free agency system has worked to destroy the Cowboys since it began, Jimmy Johnson's Boys were slowly taken away, Ken Norton, Russel Maryland, Tony Casillas, Kevin Gogan, Ron Stone, Brock Marion, George Hegamin, to name a few,. The ones in bold made the Pro Bowl after leaving. Marion was the Cowboys best free safety in past 25 years. Great range, great tackler.
We develop a great player, and then poof, he is gone. JJ overpays a handful of stars, sets is dead money, and lets the others leave and we never get properly compensated and our talent pool is diluted. That is why no Super Bowl in so long. JJ cannot get a top young QB. He must get a bargain basement guy, undrafted Romo, end of 4th round Dak, as he needs to draft so many players for other position on account of the league's system allows the other team to pillage the Cowboys best players.
The 1992 Boys team with Jimmy could have won 5-7 Super Bowls without free agency. All they needed was another CB, who would have been drafted high.

Two drafts years after Jimmy left, loss of free agents, these busts led to severe decline. The Boys have never recovered. I was dying from Jan 78 Super Bowl win until the Jan 1993 win, 15 years. What is going on now is worse than dying, 24 years since 1996 win over Steelers!!!!!! I see no possibility of beating this free agency rule, other than getting gems every year in late rounds like Jay Ratliff, Brock Marion, Larry Brown, Leon Lett and free agents like Romo, Drew Pearson, Cliff Harris.
