McNabb downplays he's upset Eagles drafted Kolb

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Donovan McNabb had the same reaction most fans had when the Philadelphia Eagles selected quarterback Kevin Kolb with their first pick in last month's NFL draft.
"It was shocking," McNabb said Tuesday in an interview on WIP-AM radio.

Speaking publicly for the first time since the draft on April 28-29, McNabb downplayed the perception he's upset the Eagles selected his eventual successor.

The five-time Pro Bowl quarterback also said his rehab is going well following surgery for a torn knee ligament and he expects to play in the preseason.

"When you draft somebody at the position you're in, of course you have questions of 'What does that mean?'" McNabb said. "The most important thing for me is to make sure I'm healthy and 100 percent and get back out there competing and do the right thing on the field."

McNabb met with coach Andy Reid soon after the draft, but wouldn't reveal details of their conversation. He doesn't have to worry about his starting job, especially since backup Jeff Garcia signed with Tampa Bay after leading the Eagles to the NFC East title and a playoff victory last season.

"If I'm healthy, it's my job," said McNabb, who sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 11 last season.

The 30-year-old McNabb has led the Eagles to four NFC championship games and a Super Bowl loss in eight seasons in Philadelphia. He's finished the regular season on the sidelines three of the past five years.

"I don't think I'm close to the end of my career," McNabb said. "People say when you hit 30, it goes down hill. I think it gets better after that. It's unfortunate I've been hurt the last few years, but things happen."

The Eagles traded out of the first round and chose Kolb in the second round with the 36th overall pick. Kolb threw for 12,964 yards, 85 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in four years at Houston. He passed for 3,808 yards, 30 TDs and only four picks last season.

"I think Kevin Kolb is going to do an excellent job for us," McNabb said. "I'm going to try and help him as much as I can. I'm sure he's going to do great. I look forward to working with him this weekend."

The Eagles open their first minicamp on Friday. McNabb won't participate in practices but will be working out at the practice facility. He said he isn't sure if he'll play in the preseason opener on Aug. 13, but expects to be ready for the second or third game.

Of course he won't reveal his convo with Andy...!

All Andy did was get McPuke (Andy's lap dog) to sit on his lap, give him a little puppy treat, scratch his big ugly ears, and tell him it's all good...

McNabb is a very weak minded guy! Just last week he was pouting like a brat...now, after talking to his owner, he's find and dandy?

OK?

Eagle or not, Mcnabb is actually a good guy from what I can tell; I believe he will help kolb out, I just think that Mcnabb is going to try and step his game up so much that Kolb never has the chance to sniff the field. I hope that doesn't happen if as we face him twice a year, so yeah. I want to see what happens.

Could you post a link of that?

I saw media personalities putting words in his mouth without even knowing what he was thinking. I couldn't find anything from him though, until today.

McNabb could've nipped the speculation in the butt by talking about this within or day or two of Kolb's selection.

Let's just beat them...twice this year. Our all time lead is shrinking. Then nobody will discuss them. They won't be important enough to discuss. Even all the Eagles haven't won a SB. Who cares? Make them irrelevant.

Well, I think the Eagles made the right decision in drafting a QB that they can groom. My biggest knock on the Cowboys is not grooming a replacement for Aikman in the late 1990's (we did have a high draft picks available back then).

Why would McNabb be upset? It isn't like he's getting any younger, entering now his 9th season. Even the best QBs usually drop off after their 10th year, so I see no wrong in what the Eagles did.

I think your impression is correct. He seems to be very insecure. I would love to have been a fly on the wall when TO was on that team. My guess is that McNabb couldn't have anyone steal his spotlight in Philly.

I agree. He's 30 years old and has missed significant playing time three out of the last five seasons. The Eagles are simply trying to cover themselves, which McNabb's history suggests is a smart move.

I agree he is smart enough to know what to say to the media, but you know his is whining and complaining to his Reid and his teammates. McFlabb is as two faced as they come.

I wonder how threatened McNabb would have felt if the Eagles would have signed Jeff Garcia to a contract. If not for Garcia's age (37) he would be the starter in Philly without a doubt. He fits the WCO perfectly and played very well last year.

I wondered what they were going to do after they released him and now we see they were probably planning to draft a QB somewhere on day-1 all along. I'm surprised that they didn't try to move up for Quinn when he fell past #20 but maybe they felt he didn't fit their offense as well as Kolb.

When McNabb is healthy and has time he is a very good QB and if they would ever get him some quality WRs & RBs he could be great. That said, his position isn't that secure after so many lapses in leadership he has shown over the last few years. His handling of Terrell Owens and other incidents didn't show him in the best light in terms of being the team leader and made it prudent for the team to look for a possible replacement for the near future.

If he stays healthy and has no issues then great, if not then they have a guy that can step in (they hope). It was prudent to bring in a young QB anyway with McNabb's health issues as he hasn't stayed healthy the last few years missing 13 games over the last 2 seasons.

It can be both.

It is shocking that Philly would trade down and make their first pick a QB. They had an opportunity to get another player that can help them now as opposed to a young QB who will not be able to make an impact for a few years. Kolb is also a good project that can be a perfect replacement for McNabb down the line. I think McNabb expected Philly to draft a QB to develop, but it is shocking that they did it with their first pick.
