Eagles QB McNabb: I'm Here To Win, Not Make Friends
CHRIS McPHERSON
5/13/2006

Quarterback Donovan McNabb on Saturday held his first press conference since the end of last season and was confident that this camp is the first road towards the team's goal of winning the Super Bowl.
"I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to win ballgames," said McNabb. "The only way we'll be able to win ballgames is by playing together and playing well. My whole mindset coming back is to work out, train, get stronger, get faster, push each other, motivate each other and have fun."

When asked if he thought he might have to win back the locker room after a tough 2005 season, McNabb said that wasn't the case. He said he felt he had never lost his teammates last year, and that he had full trust in the guys this season.

"If you can't trust your family, then who can you trust," said McNabb.

It was McNabb's first mass media press conference since tearing his sports hernia injury and missing the latter part of the 2005 campaign. If there are any scars, McNabb didn't show them. With his closely-cropped hair, he seemed to be the same McNabb who has been in five Pro Bowls in seven seasons.

Indeed, McNabb said he won't change anything about his approach to this year, although it appeared to most observers that he had lost some weight since last year.

"I'm always a nice guy. I'm not going to change who I am," said McNabb, who has spent more time in Philadelphia in this off-season than he usually does, both because of his injury rehab and his interest in sending the message to the players that "this is serious business. I take it very serious what I have to do to train. I just wanted to send a message to the guys and let them know that with everything that happened I'm still focused,

I'm still looking forward to getting back out on the field and I kind of wanted them to have that same attitude as well."

Don't get the idea, though, that the light-hearted side of McNabb is gone. He will still laugh and joke and try to keep the players loose.

"People don't think it's funny now, well I'm going to continue to laugh. I'll have to entertain myself, I guess," said McNabb. "I love everyone. I'm a loving guy. If they don't, they respect what I do."

McNabb joked later in his press conference that he wasn't worried about the upcoming Terrell Owens tell-all book that is due out in June -- in fact, McNabb said he would get a copy and hope to have it autographed by Owens -- and he wasn't concerned about the team's receiving corps. McNabb, in fact, complimented Reggie Brown and Jabar Gaffney, as well as rookie Jason Avant.

The eighth-year quarterback said last year's 6-10 record caused the team to re-evaluate itself, and that much of his self-evaluation centered on the idea of remaining the same McNabb he's always been.

So, does it mean that all of the past hitrionics involving McNabb are over? Let's hope so. McNabb said he had no need to clarify statements made prior to the Super Bowl when he compared the Owens situation to "black-on-black crime" and that he just wants to focus on football and getting the Eagles back on the winning track.

It is time to get back to the top of the NFC East, he said.

"I'm excited about getting back out on the field with the guys and taking another step towards our goal," said McNabb. Throughout the off-season, guys have communicated just awaiting the opportunity to get back out on the football field. Obviously, it's a change. A lot of the things they were doing, the training methods, have preparedus in many ways for what we are faced with now."

This is the team that scares me the most in our division.....

They had a excellent draft it seems.....time will only tell and they won without TO before and they picked up some defensive help in rushing the passer which what I thought was their biggest weakness last year.

what TO did to their team was more than morally destroy it. the receiving corpse to a step back when he came in and mcnabb changed his style of play. now that McNabb has become a pocket passer and doesnt have a solid target like TO he is going to have a hard time getting the ball away. his biggest receiving threat is his RB (Brian Westbrook) followed by his TE (L.J. Smith). when you dont have targets, no matter who you are, you arent going to be very scary, what will he do when his average receivers are in double coverage and brian westbrook is being covered by a FS, and he is being rushed by 6 or 7 players . . . the defense will keep them alive, but just like the bears, defenses only take you so far and then your offense has to do something.

Please.....This team doesn't scare me at all. They still don't have anyone to throw the ball to. Just because it appears they had a good draft doesn't mean they win the SB. If you remember correctly, it wasn't that many years ago that Dallas had a great draft, and some of those players aren't even here anymore. You can never tell how good a draft is until a year or two goes by. Don't get me wrong, the Eagles have some good players. McCrap is a good QB, but he'll need to run alot this year. The Eagles defense took a step back last year, and I don't blame it all on injuries. There secondary didn't really play well and the line really played bad at times. They're draft and FA helped, but Dallas' FA was better. TO is a stud and even if he blows up a year from now, he'll still be great this year. Think about this, Dallas has a good to stud player at mostly every position on offense and defense. The league should fear us.

Maybe I'm drinking the coolaid too much.

Maybe I'm wrong - but is that even close to being right?

I thought he said that when the NAACP guy or whoever accused him of demeaning the black race or something by not being a running QB?

i dont know about that. FS you cant say we have a good - stud player . . . keith davis is neither, Marcus Coleman is average and Pat Watkins is a nobody in the NFL. so FS is still not good.

Carpenter can hopefully be a stud at the SOLB position, but we are average-good at best with singleton. so SOLB will be determined soon.

DT needs more than Ferguson, he needs relief and he is good but whats behind him hasnt proven itself on the NFL level . . .

and all along the O-line there are questions.
Flo - hes coming off an injury, hes definately good and possibly one of the studs on this team so hes no question, ill call him good-stud.
Kosier - who? this guy was said to be below average in detroit, doesnt make him a good-stud in dallas, the guy could be good but ill say hes average.
Al Johnson was average last year, hopefully his 17 lbs and extra year of experience makes him good, but we will still have to see.
Riviera is solid, he was injured and didnt play terribly and hopefully being 2 years off of it will make him good-studly again.
and Petitti/Fabini - with petitti having 1 year of experience and having worked hard this off-season he goes from below average to average. Fabini if he beats out petitti is average-good.

so along the oline we have 2 good players and 3 question marks.
FS has 1 ? and 2 average players.
SOLB should have a good-stud player in carpenter but singelton is just good.
DT ill say is good because if stanley is average and ferguson is good ill give it to the guy who will be in there 75-90 % of the time.

McNabb did lose the locker room thats what no one is reporting he is the only player that the Eagles were willing to pay market value(above market value if you ask me) and T.O. and Brian Westbrook expressed that combine this with the fact that everyone on the team saw McNabb nut up in the Super Bowl theres no way everyone in that locker room wants you as a leader. T.O. didnt divide the lockerroom their front office did it was McNabb and everyone else.

I think it was the Favre comment saying he would be better. McFlabb took it as "Black on Black crime"

Its been reported that the whole coaching and scouting staffs were behind getting Kozier.
Detroit's football organization has been responsible for making a lot of good players(their own) look bad.

thats true, but if he was actually "good" their own fans would know it. and yes our coaches overlooked him and didnt see exactly how quick he was until mini-camp . . .

That's not quite true...

Kosier was targeted as soon as FA started... He was listed as a sleeper FA. He was not overlooked by the coaches. The quote by Mosley and repeated by Ireland is that they were surprised at how athletic he really is. Doesn't mean they didn't think he was quick prior to those comments. He did not participate in the rookie minicamp. The observations came from the offseason workouts.

And just an aside, do you really hold fan observations in as high regard as our own coaching staff? He was brought in by Mooch, was there for a year(?), prolly didn't develop a report w/the fans on any level, since they were doing the "As the QB turns" every week. They prolly weren't even paying him any attn.

If he was there to win, not make friends, then why did he have such a problem with TO. McFatty is a joke and a loser.

i misworded my post, i knew they didnt overlook his talent. i should have said they were "surprised" when he came into camp quicker than expected.

im not saying that i trust the fans observations im just saying that it is kind of weird that almost nobody knew who he was prior to the trade . . . i trust our staff just fine.

You are overthinking this. They got to three NFC championship games without TO, but that was a different team. Those teams had more talent, younger talent, and a much weaker NFC East with which to contend. This Eagles' team is devoid of talent; it is the fourth best team in the division.

Don't get me wrong, they have a great deal of pride and a real easy first half schedule (I think they come into the Cowboys game 3-1 at worst), but the Eagles will not finish better than 9-7 this year and could easily be 6-10 if things don't break well for them.

I don't think anybody in the NFC will be taking the eagles lightly, and I seriously doubt they go 0-6 in the division again either. But I'm not sure that a healthy McNabb is THE ANSWER. I liked their draft but they still have their share of holes on both sides of the football, and the NFC East might be the toughest division from the top to bottom.

We were the only team in the division that can say we swept them with McNabb in the line-up as he played in both games against us, so I'm not overly concerned with them, but on the flipside they did pretty much own us the previous 5 years before 2005 so we can't assume that they will be 2 easy wins this year.

The Answer sees the eagles as a .500 type of team this year, they will beat some good teams, but lose to some bad ones as they continue their rebuilding process. At this point I'm hoping they go can muster 2 or 3 wins in their 4 games against the Commanders and Giants and help our cause. But if we are truly for real we will need another sweep of birds in 2006.

we should not take the eagles lighty this year with out t.o they were already a good team. so i dont understand why alot of people are sayin they are a diffrent team, when they won all them NFC championships before. i mean im a big cowboys fan but i aint dumb either i see whats around.

"I'm not here to make friends...

mission accomplished... :D

seriously, tho, if mcfats dropped 10/15 pounds and the Eagles ever got a decent feature back... ya know... one that can actually run the ball successfully for 16 games - they might actually pull off the deal. as in lombardi.

i wouldn't write 'em off yet.
