i dont know how soo many people are confused about losing the timeout or not. In soo many games this is explained if the play doesn't result in a first down through the replay (regardless if the ball is moved or not) the challenging team still looses the timeout. The only way you win the challenge and your timeout is if its a first down.

People are confused because that is almost never explained. You need a lawyer with you to watch an NFL game these days.

It was definitely an inch or two short. My question is: Could the Eagles have still won the challenge but not gotten a 1st down? The spot given to them was clearly wrong, though still short.

Winning the challenge might have saved them one timeout which would have forced us to get one more first down. Actually, I have the same question for the McCoy first down. The spot was wrong. Did the Eagles actually win the challenge but once again not get a first down?

unless they changed the rule on this even if the spot is wrong and they move the spot of the ball if it doesn't result in a first down (yard to gain) then the challenge is lost and the team loses the time out.

Not sure which team it was last year challenged the spot, the refs agreed the spot was wrong and respotted the ball but it wasn't enough to get the first down so they lost the challenge, and their Time Out.
